Is smoking harmful to rectal cancer?

Colorectal cancer is a common disease. The occurrence of this disease is closely related to the patient's lifestyle, especially the daily diet. Surveys show that colorectal cancer has jumped to the second place in the cancer rankings, so we need to pay more attention to our diet and lifestyle in daily life. According to a new study, women who smoke are more likely to develop colorectal cancer.

The risk of colorectal cancer in women who smoke is nearly twice that of women who have never smoked, especially those who smoke a lot every day, smoke for a long time, and quit smoking in old age, is higher. This also supports the results of earlier studies on this aspect.

The study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, states that smoking cessation and prevention are still the main causes of colorectal cancer. Researchers at Ohio State University conducted a long-term observational study on the incidence of colorectal cancer in 14,000 women aged 50 to 79. Among these women, 51% had never smoked, 42% had smoked in the past, and 7% were current smokers. The researchers found that among the women who had smoked for an average of more than 7.8 years, 1,242 of them developed invasive colorectal cancer, including 176 with colorectal cancer.

Compared with women who have never smoked, current smokers have a 95 percent increased risk of developing rectal cancer, but no increased risk of developing colon cancer.

The findings held true after the researchers took into account other factors that influence the risk of colorectal cancer, including age, race, family history, physical activity, use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, hormone therapy, alcohol intake, calcium intake, fiber, fat and red meat intake, waist circumference and family history of diabetes in women.

After reading the introduction in this article, we know that there is a close connection between smoking and the occurrence of rectal cancer. Therefore, in order to effectively prevent the occurrence of rectal cancer, women should pay attention to staying away from cigarettes in their daily lives.
