Colon cancer patients often experience some stoma complications after surgery, such as stoma bleeding, peristomal skin disease, stoma stenosis, parastomal hernia, etc. How to deal with these complications?

Stoma bleeding

When the stoma bleeds, you can apply Yunnan Baiyao externally. Try to avoid wiping the stoma mucosa with dry paper. Wash it with water when necessary.

Peristomal skin disease

Peri-stomal skin diseases are mostly caused by fecal spillage irritating the local skin, or allergies caused by the surrounding skin coming into contact with the stoma bag. They manifest as local skin rashes, ulcers, and redness and swelling. At this time, the skin around the stoma should be thoroughly cleaned, and zinc oxide ointment or Ruyi Jinhuang Powder should be applied under the guidance of a doctor. Vaseline gauze can also be used to cover the skin at the stoma. At the same time, use the stoma bag correctly to avoid leakage of excrement.

Stoma stenosis

Stoma colostomy is the main cause of stoma stenosis. Scar hyperplasia caused by incision infection can also cause stoma stenosis. Mild stenosis can be solved by dilating the stoma with fingers. The specific method is to wear gloves and choose a finger of appropriate thickness according to the degree of stoma stenosis. Slowly insert about 4cm~5cm into the stoma for 15min~20min each time, 1~2 times a day. If you persist for about 2 months, the stenosis can be effectively relieved. For stenosis caused by scar hyperplasia, or stoma stenosis that is ineffective with the above methods, it is recommended to go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment in time to avoid delaying the condition.

Parastomal hernia

It is mostly caused by weakened abdominal wall strength and continuous increase in abdominal pressure, and is more common in elderly patients. In the early stage of the disease, there is a mass around the stoma, which gradually increases and appears when standing, walking, and coughing. It disappears when lying down or when the mass is returned to the abdominal cavity by hand. There may be a sense of expansion and impact when pressing the mass with the hand and coughing. In the early stage of the disease, if the symptoms are mild, an elastic bandage can be used on the abdomen to alleviate the symptoms of organ herniation. If the symptoms continue to progress, you should go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment in time.
