How to treat patients with laryngeal cancer and pulmonary tuberculosis

Xu Wei's mother is nearly 70 years old this year. She has been complaining about throat discomfort recently. The son loves his mother so much that he accompanied his mother to a nearby clinic for medical treatment. The doctor treated her for pharyngitis and prescribed some medicine.

After taking the medicine, Xu Wei's mother's "pharyngitis" was not only not cured, but it tended to get worse. She also had more frequent coughs, more severe throat pain, and her voice became hoarse. Xu Wei could no longer sit still and immediately took his mother to the hospital for examination.

The sputum culture showed weak positive tuberculosis antibodies, and the biopsy pathological diagnosis showed that Xu Wei's mother had laryngeal cancer (bilateral vocal cord squamous cell carcinoma). In order to determine the scope, a laryngoscopy was performed, which showed that the vocal cords and bilateral aryepiglottic folds were thickened, the surface was smooth, the right vocal cord was locally raised, and there was no obvious stenosis of the laryngeal cavity. The examination of other parts also showed normal.

Chest imaging examinations showed that Xu Wei's mother had secondary pulmonary tuberculosis with cavity formation, compensatory emphysema in the left lung, and right-sided pleural effusion.

After consultation with doctors, the first stage of treatment was mainly aimed at Xu Wei's mother's tuberculosis. However, there was no improvement through treatment of tuberculosis, and Xu Wei's mother's cough, hoarseness and other symptoms became more and more serious. The doctor suggested that necessary radiotherapy could be used to inhibit the development of the tumor, while continuing to treat tuberculosis. Only when tuberculosis is cured can laryngeal cancer surgery be performed.

Xu Wei’s only thought at the moment is that his mother’s illness can get better.
