Should neck and shoulder exercises be performed after total laryngectomy

Total laryngectomy is suitable for patients with advanced laryngeal cancer, primary subglottic cancer, recurrence after partial laryngectomy or radiotherapy, and hypopharyngeal cancer patients whose laryngeal function cannot be preserved. After total laryngectomy, patients, especially those who undergo cervical lymph node dissection, may have varying degrees of damage to the neck and shoulder muscles. Patients are often unwilling to move more due to pain or other discomfort symptoms, which leads to muscle atrophy, limited upper limb function and movement, and affected quality of life.

After total laryngectomy, patients should do appropriate exercise as soon as possible to promote physical recovery and avoid complications. Exercise should be gradual, and the amount of exercise should be increased gradually. Do not rush for results. In particular, the neck and shoulder function should be strengthened. Neck activity exercises include flexion, backward bending, left and right lateral bending, rotation, etc.; shoulder joint function exercises include extension, extension, lifting, lateral lifting, adduction, external rotation, etc. Patients need to practice under the guidance of professionals to gradually restore normal function.

Tips--After total laryngectomy, patients cannot speak normally. When going out alone, it is best to carry a security identity card with you. The card should indicate the patient's name, home address, contact person and telephone number in case of emergency.
