Treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma

98% of nasopharyngeal carcinomas are poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas, and radiotherapy is the first choice, usually using cobalt-60 or linear accelerator high-energy radiotherapy. During radiotherapy, surgery, chemotherapy, traditional Chinese medicine and immunotherapy can be combined.

1. Radiation therapy

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is sensitive to radiation. The primary lesion and cervical lymph node drainage area of nasopharyngeal carcinoma can be included in the irradiation field. The 5-year survival rate of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in all stages of radiotherapy is about 50%. Radiotherapy can be divided into radical radiotherapy and palliative radiotherapy. During treatment, care should be taken to avoid radiation reactions.

2. Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma may shrink the tumor or eliminate tiny lesions, improve the treatment effect, and have certain short-term efficacy. High-dose DDP and 5-Fu can achieve a 90% remission rate. However, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are still needed after the application of chemotherapy.

3. Surgical treatment

Surgical treatment is suitable for patients with residual or local recurrence in the nasopharynx 3 months after radiotherapy for NPC, or patients with residual lesions and metastasis in the neck after radiotherapy.

4. Treatment with traditional Chinese medicine

As auxiliary treatment, Chinese medicine can be used, such as Liangying anti-cancer mixture, Jishu anti-cancer mixture, Shuangba Shen anti-cancer capsules, and dispersing and softening plasters.
