What to do if a child has a stye on his eye?

Many parents are very worried when they find that their children have styes in their eyes, but they don’t know how to help them treat it. It is important to seize the opportunity to treat styes on children's eyes. In the early stages when the symptoms are not serious, you can use some anti-inflammatory eye drops for treatment. You can also use hot compresses for treatment. If the stye has already become purulent, you must perform surgery to drain the pus.

1. Local medication: If the stye above the child's eye is still in the early stages, the symptoms are mild. Generally speaking, appropriate local treatment can control its development, allowing the inflammation to gradually subside and heal. Treatment methods include: applying appropriate anti-inflammatory eye drops to the affected eye during the day, such as Topax, Rifampicin, Talibactol, etc., once every 3-4 hours. Apply anti-inflammatory eye ointment such as chloramphenicol or erythromycin before going to bed at night.

2. Hot compress: If the child can cooperate with hot compress, you can use a hot towel to apply local treatment frequently every day. Hot compress can improve local blood circulation, dilate blood vessels, promote the absorption of inflammation, etc., which can significantly shorten the course of the disease. The specific hot compress method is to soak a towel in hot water, wring it out slightly and place it on the affected eye for about 30 minutes. It should be noted that the temperature of the towel should be maintained at about 45 degrees Celsius. Parents can place it on the eyelid skin to test the temperature before using it on their children to prevent burns.

3. Systemic medication and surgery: If the symptoms of a stye in a child's eye are already quite serious, with not only local redness and swelling but also fever and fatigue, systemic antibiotic treatment is necessary, such as intramuscular injection of penicillin or oral administration of amoxicillin, erythromycin, etc. If the stye has already formed a pus head, you should wait until the abscess matures before making an incision and draining the pus.

After incision and drainage of pus in a child's eye stye, attention should be paid to disinfection measures, and antibiotic eye drops or ointments should be actively applied. In normal times, we should also pay attention to maintaining good hygiene habits and avoid children rubbing their eyes with their hands, so as to speed up local recovery and prevent recurrence of symptoms.
