Is muteness hereditary?

Some people become mute due to acquired factors, but some are born mute. So is muteness hereditary? It is indeed a hereditary condition. Since congenital deafness is a common chromosome-related disease, if both parents are mute, there is a high possibility that the child will be mute. In addition to genetic factors, sometimes certain diseases can also cause damage to the auditory organs, and people naturally cannot speak because they cannot hear.

Congenital deaf-muteness is a common chromosomal recessive genetic disease. Of the pair of disease-causing genes for this disease, one is passed on from the father and the other is passed on from the mother. Congenital deaf-mute patients all carry a pair of disease-causing genes. If they marry each other, their children will most likely be born deaf and dumb.

Congenital deaf-mute. In addition to genetic factors, it is mostly caused by infectious diseases or certain drugs during embryonic development, which causes the auditory organs to fail to differentiate and develop or to develop incompletely. It may also be caused by damage to the auditory nerve that transmits auditory signals. If the auditory organ has not differentiated and developed at all, no treatment will be effective. Therefore, it is recommended that you take him to a regular hospital's ENT department for examination to determine as soon as possible whether he has any residual hearing. If there is still a certain amount of residual hearing that can be used, acupuncture therapy can be used to increase the excitability of the auditory center. Combined with auditory and language training, it may be possible to learn to speak. If auditory testing determines that there is no residual hearing that can be used, then it is impossible to cure. There is no need to spend money looking for strange remedies or "sponsor" quacks. A positive approach is to conduct language training or learn sign language in order to lay a foundation for future communication. Many deaf-mute people have acquired considerable communication skills through learning and can do excellent work. For example, some pastry chefs were once deaf-mute, but they made delicious pastries. Isn’t this finding the value of life for themselves?

Prevention and care

1. Prevention of congenital deaf-muteness: undergo a premarital checkup and carefully consider your spouse. Actively participate in prenatal and postnatal checkups, and understand and cooperate with the work of medical staff. Pay attention to fetal education during pregnancy; if the pregnant woman is sick, use medication with caution, especially several drugs that have been proven to affect the hearing of the fetus; avoid marrying close relatives; pay attention to nutrition during pregnancy.

2. Prevention of acquired deaf-muteness: If infected with acute infectious diseases, they should be treated seriously, thoroughly and promptly; diseases of adjacent organs should also be treated thoroughly; several drugs that have been proven to damage hearing should be used with caution or prohibited; infants and young children after three months should be kept away from explosions and noises.

3. Nursing: Deaf-mute children cannot speak, so they have a bad temper. They cannot receive normal education, so they are often unreasonable. They should be sympathized and understood.
