Discussing the causes of pancreatic cancer from the death of Steve Jobs

A piece of news shook the fragile nerves of the world. Beijing time, October 6, according to foreign media reports, the PC industry pioneer, Apple chairman and co-founder Steve Jobs (Steven P. Jobs), who changed the world's view of technology, died on Wednesday. Since 2003, Jobs' pancreas has touched the nerves of many people. In October 2003, Fortune magazine revealed that Jobs suffered from "rare pancreatic cancer". In July 2004, he underwent a "pancreas resection" operation. After the operation, Jobs said that the disease was "cured". However, in April 2009, Jobs underwent another liver transplant operation, which was said to be related to his "pancreatic cancer". In January 2011, he took sick leave again...

The cause of pancreatic cancer is still unclear. Surveys have found that the incidence rate is relatively high in patients with diabetes, long-term smokers, heavy drinkers, and those who eat a high-fat, high-animal protein diet. The incidence rate of male patients is much higher than that of premenopausal women, and the incidence rate of postmenopausal women is similar to that of men. In addition, long-term living in an environment polluted by carcinogens significantly increases the incidence rate. Gastrectomy is also a risk factor for pancreatic cancer, which is significantly higher than that of other groups.

The medical community believes that the incidence of pancreatic cancer is closely related to diet, emotions, and environmental carcinogens. Smoking, drinking, overeating, and irregular work and rest schedules are all considered to be high-risk factors for pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is "difficult to detect and easy to metastasize." The pancreas is located in a very special position, adjacent to the stomach, duodenum, liver and gallbladder, behind the stomach and in front of the lumbar muscles and spine. Routine physical examinations do not easily reveal pancreatic lesions, and few people think of doing regular checks on this silently dedicated little organ.

Because of this, once pancreatic cancer is discovered, it is often already in the middle or late stages. There are no typical symptoms in the early stages of pancreatic cancer. Some patients only experience loss of appetite and nausea.

Symptoms such as vomiting and abdominal pain during meals are often confused with stomach problems. Pancreatic cancer is not felt until it reaches the late stage, when the enlarged tumor compresses the peripheral nerves and causes severe pain.

On the other hand, due to the rich blood vessels around the pancreas, the tumor grows very fast and metastasizes to the surrounding organs. Therefore, pancreatic cancer has the characteristics of being "difficult to detect and easy to metastasize". Most of the pancreatic cancer patients discovered clinically are already in the late stage, and a considerable number of them have already metastasized. Many patients have therefore lost the opportunity for surgery. All of this makes the prognosis of pancreatic cancer very bleak, and pancreatic cancer is known as the "king of cancer."
