What is the difference between deep sleep and light sleep?

For the same sleep time, the effect of long sleep is different, which is closely related to the time of deep sleep. Some people sleep for a long time, but still feel very sleepy after getting up. This may be caused by shallow sleep. You can take many methods to deepen your sleep, such as massage, diet regulation, and mood adjustment, etc. Let’s understand the difference between deep sleep and shallow sleep.

The difference between deep sleep and light sleep:

Deep sleep is a part of sleep, accounting for only 25% of the total sleep time. Deep sleep is also called "golden sleep". People's nighttime sleep is generally divided into 5 to 6 repetitive cycles, and each sleep cycle lasts about 60 to 90 minutes. Based on the changes in brain waves, muscle waves and eye activities during sleep, the sleep cycle consists of non-rapid eye movement cycles and rapid eye movement cycles. Non-rapid eye movement sleep is divided into four stages: light sleep, light sleep, moderate sleep and deep sleep. Then, it enters the rapid eye movement sleep stage, which marks the end of a sleep cycle, and then continues to start the next sleep cycle. Studies have shown that light sleep and light sleep, which account for about 55% of the total sleep time, have little effect on relieving fatigue. Only the middle sleep, deep sleep and rapid eye movement sleep that enter the deep sleep state have a greater effect on relieving fatigue. Because in the deep sleep state, the cerebral cortex cells are in a state of full rest, which plays a vital role in eliminating fatigue, restoring energy, immunity and disease resistance. However, this deep sleep only accounts for 25% of the total sleep time. Therefore, when evaluating the quality of sleep, we should not only look at the time, but more importantly, the quality. Improving sleep quality ultimately depends on the length of deep sleep time. In sleep science, "deep sleep" is a deep rest in which the brain is not active after falling asleep. During the night of sleep, one first enters light sleep and then naturally enters deep sleep, then light sleep again and then deep sleep again, alternating back and forth until waking up. Deep sleep is also called "golden sleep", which is commonly referred to as "golden sleep" or "golden sleep".

Deep sleep, several times a night

People need to sleep seven or eight hours every night, but such a long period of time is not just a deep sleep, but is divided into several "sleep cycles".

Simply put, a person's sleep cycle can be roughly divided into three types: light sleep, deep sleep, and rapid eye movement sleep.

The sleep cycle is a continuous cycle from light sleep to deep sleep and rapid eye movement sleep, and each cycle is about 90 minutes.

If we sleep for 8 hours a night, it will go through 4 to 5 cycles, which means that we usually experience 4 to 5 deep sleeps every night.

During deep sleep, growth hormone is secreted in large quantities, which has an important impact on the body's repair and growth.

Studies have shown that deep sleep plays an important role in the consolidation of memory, which is one of the reasons why sleep can help with knowledge learned during the day.

In other words, people who sleep well are likely to have better brains.
