How it works

The structure of an ordinary rice cooker: An ordinary rice cooker is mainly composed of a heating plate, a temperature limiter, a heat preservation switch, a lever switch, a current limiting resistor, an indicator light, a socket, etc.

Heating plate

This is the main heating element of the rice cooker. This is an aluminum alloy disc with an embedded electric heating tube. The inner pot is placed on it and can be seen by removing the inner pot.

Temperature limiter

Also called magnetic steel. It has a permanent magnetic ring and a spring inside, which can be pressed and is located in the center of the heating plate. When cooking rice, when the cooking switch is pressed, the suction force of the magnetic steel drives the lever switch to keep the power contacts connected. When the rice is cooked, the temperature of the bottom of the pot continues to rise, and the suction force of the permanent magnetic ring weakens with the increase in temperature. When the water in the inner pot is evaporated and the temperature of the bottom of the pot reaches 103±2C, the suction force of the magnetic ring is less than the elastic force of the spring on it, and the temperature limiter is pushed down by the spring, driving the lever switch to cut off the power.

Insulation switch

Also called a thermostat. It consists of a spring sheet, a pair of normally closed contacts, a pair of normally open contacts, and a bimetallic sheet. When cooking, the temperature inside the pot rises. Due to the different thermal expansion rates of the two metal sheets that make up the bimetallic strip, the bimetallic strip bends upward. When the temperature reaches above 80 degrees Celsius, the spring sheet drives the normally open and normally closed contacts to switch under the push of the upward-bent bimetallic strip, thereby cutting off the power supply to the heating tube and stopping heating. When the temperature in the pot drops below 80 degrees Celsius, the bimetallic strip gradually cools down and recovers, the normally open and normally closed contacts switch again, connecting the power of the heating tube to heat it. Repeat this process to achieve the heat preservation effect.

Lever switch

The switch is a purely mechanical structure with one normally open contact. When cooking, press this switch to connect the heating tube to the power supply, and at the same time supply power to the heating indicator light to light it up. When the meal is ready, the temperature limiter pops down, driving the lever switch to disconnect the contacts. After this, the heating tube is only controlled by the insulation switch.

Current limiting resistor

It is mostly golden or white in appearance, about the size of a 3W resistor, and is placed between the heating tube and the power supply to protect the heating tube. The commonly used current limiting resistor is 185C 5A or 10A (depending on the power of the rice cooker). The current limiting resistor is a key component to protect the heating tube and cannot be replaced by a wire.
