Will the swollen eyelids from hyperthyroidism last forever?

Will the swollen eyelids from hyperthyroidism last forever?

Eye swelling is a common physical sign in patients with hyperthyroidism, but it can be reduced through certain treatments. Hyperthyroidism is a chronic disease and we need to adjust our lifestyle. Although it cannot be completely cured, it can maintain our normal life and avoid the occurrence of various adverse factors. During the treatment of hyperthyroidism, you must pay attention to dietary safety. So, will the swollen eyelids caused by hyperthyroidism last a lifetime?

1. Treatment methods

The most commonly used clinical treatment for exophthalmos is corticosteroids, such as prednisone, which have certain therapeutic effects and are easy to use. However, it has a slow effect, a long course of disease and many side effects. Other immunosuppressants, such as cyclochrome A and cyclophosphamide, have certain therapeutic effects, but they have significant side effects. The effectiveness of other methods, such as radiotherapy, blood transfusion therapy and even surgical treatment for severe exophthalmos, is still uncertain. Some people also used Yunke for treatment, but apart from improving some symptoms, it had no obvious effect on exophthalmos. In fact, Chinese medicine has few side effects in the diagnosis and treatment of hyperthyroidism, and its efficacy is worthy of recognition. The most common clinical treatment for exophthalmos is Chinese medicine. Hyperthyroidism tea can be used, which has certain efficacy and is easy to use.

2. Nursing

1. People with diplopia wear a unilateral eye patch. This is mainly for the safety of the patients. Diplopia is caused by the lack of convergence of both eyes. People with diplopia see double images, which affects their daily life, walking, and conversation, making them prone to injury, especially when walking. If you wear a unilateral eye patch and see objects as one, there will be no such problem.

2. When going out, wear tinted glasses to prevent light stimulation and damage from dust and foreign objects. There are many colored glasses on the market that only have aesthetic effects but no actual light-blocking function, so it is generally recommended to choose dark-colored glasses of better quality with larger lenses and frames to achieve the purpose of light-blocking and dust-proofing.

3. Use eye drops frequently to moisten your eyes and avoid excessive dryness. Patients should be taught the correct method of applying eye drops. Do not drop the medicine directly on the cornea. Pinch the lower eyelid and drop 1-2 drops into it, rotate the eyeball, gently release the lower eyelid, and pinch the root of the nose if necessary to prevent the medicine from entering the entrance of the nasolacrimal duct.

4. Apply antibiotic eye ointment before going to bed and cover both eyes with sterile saline gauze. On the one hand, this is to prevent the occurrence of inflammation, and on the other hand, it is to make it easier for patients to fall asleep. This is not a problem for patients with mild exophthalmos, but for patients with severe exophthalmos, incomplete eyelid closure will reduce sleep and make it difficult to fall asleep. Covering both eyes with sterile saline gauze can moisten the cornea and prevent excessive dryness. On the other hand, it can block light and help patients fall asleep.

5. When the patient feels a foreign body sensation, stinging or tears in the eye, do not rub the eye directly with your hands, as hands may carry bacteria and cause infection. The patient can be asked to clean his hands before gently touching his eyes. This is a preventive care method for exophthalmos caused by hyperthyroidism.
