Does eardrum repair surgery hurt?

Eardrum repair surgery is not uncommon in clinical practice. This type of surgery is usually performed when the eardrum is ruptured. When the eardrum is damaged, it needs to be repaired in time. Many people worry about the effectiveness of the surgery during the operation. Some people are very afraid of pain, so they are particularly worried about the feeling of the surgery. Of course, this is also something that needs to be paid attention to during the operation. Is eardrum repair surgery painful?

1. There are two causes of ruptured eardrum. One is caused by trauma, and the other is caused by infection, such as suppurative otitis media, and of course, post-traumatic infection. Generally, traumatic perforations can heal on their own in about one to two weeks as long as there is no infection. Perforation caused by infection can only be repaired after the infection is controlled or the inflammation is in the dormant stage. Tympanoplasty requires anesthesia before the operation, so it is not painful. After traumatic perforation of the tympanic membrane, the main thing is to prevent infection, including avoiding water from entering the ear canal, and even prohibiting the use of any ear drops to prevent bacteria from the external auditory canal from being brought into the middle ear cavity. Blowing your nose is prohibited to prevent colds. If infection has occurred, antibiotics should be used to treat it and repair it in time after the inflammation is under control.

2. In case of tympanic membrane perforation, surgical treatment is required. Simple drug treatment is not effective. Generally, tympanic membrane repair surgery can be performed with local anesthesia or general anesthesia. It takes half an hour to an hour. There is no pain during the operation. After anesthesia, there will be some pain, but it is within a tolerable range, so don't worry too much.

3. If the perforation of the eardrum is caused by trauma and the perforation is over a large area, it cannot heal on its own and you should go to the ENT department of the local hospital for timely treatment and do an eardrum repair surgery. The surgery is done with anesthesia and should be painless. Any surgery has risks, but they do not necessarily happen. It usually takes about four weeks to recover after the surgery.
