Can charcoal remove formaldehyde?

Can charcoal remove formaldehyde?

There are many ways to remove formaldehyde. If you don’t know the specific operations, you can search directly on the Internet and then follow the specific methods. Or you can use the simplest method, which is to ventilate the room frequently to naturally remove the formaldehyde in the room. Of course, this method takes a lot of time. Some people also use charcoal to remove formaldehyde. Is it feasible to remove formaldehyde with charcoal?

Formaldehyde removal activated carbon is a kind of activated carbon that removes formaldehyde. The method of removing formaldehyde by activated carbon is called physical adsorption in the industry, which is different from chemical neutralization treatment such as gas catalyst formaldehyde removal.

Activated carbon classification

It can be divided into: wood activated carbon, fruit shell activated carbon, animal bone/blood activated carbon, mineral raw material activated carbon, synthetic resin activated carbon, rubber/plastic activated carbon, regenerated activated carbon, etc. Common activated carbon classification:

1. Classification by raw material source: fruit shell charcoal (coconut shell, apricot kernel, walnut shell, olive shell, etc.), coal charcoal, wood charcoal, etc. Among them: coconut shell material (especially Southeast Asian coconut shell) is recognized at home and abroad as the best activated carbon raw material due to its high strength, good adsorption performance, low ash content and long service life. Its characteristic is that the cost is relatively high.

——Activated carbon made from coal is usually activated by water vapor or carbon dioxide gas. The product is mainly granular in shape, and its pore size distribution is mostly micropores, which is more suitable for liquid phase adsorption and substances with smaller molecular weight and molecular diameter in the gas phase. The advantage is that the production cost is relatively low;

——Activated carbon made from sawdust is usually activated by chemical methods. The product is mainly in powder form. Its pore size distribution can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of chemical activators. It is relatively flexible and can produce products with a pore size distribution dominated by micropores or products with a large proportion of mesopores (transitional pores). It is more suitable for adsorbing substances with larger molecular weight and molecular diameter in the liquid phase.

——Activated carbon made from fruit shells is usually activated by water vapor and carbon dioxide gas. The product is mainly in granular shape. Due to its special material, its pore size distribution is between the above two types of activated carbon. It has excellent adsorption performance, so its application range is wider.

2. Classification by manufacturing method: gas activated carbon (or physical activated carbon), chemical activated carbon (or chemical activated carbon), chemical-physical activated carbon.

3. Classification by appearance and shape: amorphous granular activated carbon (or crushed activated carbon), shaped activated carbon (or shaped activated carbon) and powdered activated carbon.

4. According to the use of activated carbon: activated carbon for sugar, activated carbon for wood vehicles, activated carbon for air purification, activated carbon for water purification, activated carbon for oil and gas recovery, activated carbon for medicine, activated carbon for supercapacitors, activated carbon for catalyst carriers, etc.
