Will curling irons damage your hair? Six taboos when using curling irons

Many people know that perming hair is actually very damaging to hair quality. However, for girls who love beauty, having beautiful hair is much more important than whether the hair is damaged. However, since the advent of curling irons, many girls like to curl their hair at home, which is quick and worry-free. So the question is, does curling iron harm hair?

Sydney dermatologist Professor Phillip Artemi said hair damage from curling irons was becoming more common in Australia, with more women presenting to clinics waiting to save their severely damaged hair; this was a common phenomenon around the world.

To save damaged hair, experts also put forward their own suggestions: cut the hair short and keep it for 2 to 3 years, stop using curling irons, hair dryers and heating products, and avoid sun exposure.

Why do curling irons damage your hair?

Compared to hair perming with chemicals, plastic curling irons use physical methods. Chemicals change the protein structure of hair and use chemicals to shape and bend the hair, which will obviously damage the hair. Generally, after perming your hair, you will feel that it becomes very frizzy, which is a damage to the hair quality. In comparison, although plastic curling irons cannot keep hair in a curly shape all the time, the physical fixation only temporarily changes the shape of the hair and essentially does not damage the hair.

When using plastic curling irons, some low-quality plastic curling irons are made of poor quality plastic and will often get caught on your hair. This kind of pulling can be considered as a kind of damage to the hair, so when buying a plastic curling iron, you should choose one with better quality, at least it should not feel scratchy and it is okay to buy it without getting your hair caught. For soft hair, it is not recommended to use plastic curling irons because it takes a long time to fix the hair and the effect is very poor.

6 Curling Iron NG Actions

(1) Use a curling iron when your hair is wet

If you use a curling iron on wet hair, you won't be able to create the perfect curls. Not only that, some of the necessary moisture that the hair needs will be lost, so it is best to blow dry your hair before using a curling iron.

(2) No plasticizer added

The plasticizer used when curling hair can protect the hair from damage by high temperature and make the curls last longer.

(3) The curling iron is heated too high

If a curling iron without temperature adjustment function is overheated, the temperature may reach as high as 160~180 degrees.

This temperature is the same as frying sweet and sour pork, which is very high. If you choose a curling iron that can adjust the temperature, try to adjust it to around 145 degrees. If you can't do that, be sure not to use too high a temperature!

(4) Keep the curling iron in contact with your hair for a long time

Prolonged contact with hot objects can cause immediate damage. It is usually best to move the curling iron away for a while every 3 to 5 seconds.

(5) Curl the hair to the ends

The ends of your hair are also easily damaged, so starting from the middle of your hair will give you a natural curl!

(6) Not doing anything other than drying your hair before going to bed

After washing and blow-drying your hair, don't forget to apply hair oil or some no-rinse conditioner. Providing your hair with complete nutritional supplements while sleeping is also a way to reduce damage!
