Why do I have a headache after waking up

The purpose of sleep is to allow the body to rest, but some people experience headaches after sleeping. Headaches usually occur when we wake up in the morning. We originally want to be energized to greet the new day, but after waking up we are hit hard by a headache and cannot think normally, which has a great impact on our spirit for the whole day. Headache during sleep may be a manifestation of disease, and the cause needs to be identified. So, why do you feel a headache after sleeping?

1. You’re not getting enough sleep

Your body needs 7-9 hours of rest to function properly during the day. Lack of sleep can easily lead to faster heart rate, higher blood pressure and increased stress when you wake up in the morning, causing headaches. It is recommended to take a 20-30 minute nap during lunch break, which can allow the body to get more rest and relieve headaches. Be careful not to take too long a nap, as this will make your headache worse. Try to restore your normal sleep cycle at night, too, and maybe you won’t have a headache the next day.

2. You sleep too much

Lack of sleep can cause morning headaches, so would it be helpful to do the opposite and stay in bed longer? In fact, if you sleep more than 9 hours at night, the serotonin level in the brain will decrease, and then cause headaches. This type of headache often occurs on weekends because you have plenty of time to stay in bed. Sleeping is something that should be avoided in moderation. This shows that setting alarms on weekends is also very important.

3. You drank alcohol last night

Drinking too much can cause a severe headache the next day. Drinking even small amounts of alcohol can dehydrate you, which reduces blood flow to your brain and can make your head hurt. Also, alcohol can make it harder to fall asleep, delay falling asleep, and reduce sleep duration, which is another common cause of headaches. The best way is to replenish water. In addition, soaking vitamin C tablets in water can also help the liver process alcohol more effectively, making it disappear from the body faster.

4. Your endorphin secretion is disordered

The most important hormone for improving your mood is endorphin, which is at its lowest level in the morning. For some people, this can trigger migraines. Because low levels of endorphins affect serotonin levels, causing the blood vessels in the brain to narrow. This narrowing reduces blood flow to the brain, thereby triggering headaches. For this type of people, regular exercise is more important. Because exercise triggers the release of endorphins.

5. You snore at night

Snoring that sounds like a chainsaw could be a sign of sleep apnea. This situation can cause you to suffocate, be unable to breathe air, or even temporarily stop breathing. Although it is not completely certain that this is the cause of headaches, it is clear that reduced oxygen can cause blood vessels in the brain to dilate, increasing pressure in the head and causing pain.

6. You drank coffee

Caffeine is a substance that stimulates the nervous system. If you drink coffee regularly or suddenly want to quit caffeine, and do not get up on time, you may feel dizzy when you get up. Sudden caffeine withdrawal can cause blood vessels in the brain to dilate, posing the risk of headaches. If you are a coffee drinker who drinks coffee at the same time every morning, you are more likely to suffer from a caffeine headache. If this group of people want to quit caffeine, they need to do it slowly and not too suddenly.

7. Your blood pressure is high

Morning headaches may also be caused by high blood pressure. However, many people are unaware that their blood pressure is high because there are not many outward symptoms. So if headaches are frequent and unexplained, see your doctor. Having a headache in the morning is never normal, and if it is due to your bad habits, it is best to change them. If you find that you still have headaches after correcting the problem, you should consider it as a disease.
