Causes of Mongolian spots

As we all know, spots are uneven pigmentation caused by melanin deposition in the skin. According to different causes and symptoms, they are also divided into different types. Common facial spots in our lives include color spots, light spots, radiation spots, etc., which are mostly caused by acquired lifestyle habits, while Mongolian spots are a congenital pigmentation phenomenon. So what causes Mongolian spots?

Causes of Mongolian spots

In the embryo, melanocytes reside deep in the dermis during their migration from the neural crest to the epidermis.

Clinical manifestations of Mongolian spots

Pigmented spots are almost always confined to the lumbar region and buttocks, occasionally seen on the thighs or even shoulders, and are gray-green, blue or blue-black in color, round, oval or irregular in shape, with unclear edges, and a diameter ranging from only a few millimeters to more than ten centimeters. They are mostly single, but occasionally multiple.

Can Mongolian spots grow on the face?

Mongolian spots can occur anywhere on the human body, mostly on the waist and buttocks, but there is also a certain chance of them occurring on the face.

When do Mongolian spots disappear?

Mongolian spots are generally the most common birthmark in newborns. They are congenital and have an incidence rate of approximately 86.3%. Parents of newborns can find some light gray-green and dark-green spots on their baby's waist, buttocks and back. They are usually symmetrical on both sides and mostly odd in number. They are mostly round, oval and square in shape, but the boundaries are not very obvious. Although the probability of occurrence is quite high, most of the spots disappear on their own between the ages of 5 and 7 without leaving any traces, but occasionally they persist into adulthood or even expand.

Do babies need treatment for Mongolian spots?

Experts say that although the chance of Mongolian spots occurring in babies is quite high, they will almost certainly disappear naturally as the baby grows up, and for most babies, they will disappear spontaneously before the age of 5. Treatment is generally not required, so parents do not need to worry.

If the baby's Mongolian spots appear in a relatively hidden place on the body, parents do not need to worry, as it does not affect the appearance and is not a disease. However, if it grows on the face, parents are advised to consult a doctor if they want treatment.

Can laser remove Mongolian spots?

The current methods for treating Mongolian spots include laser removal of Mongolian spots.
