Lying posture for lumbar disc herniation

Lying posture for lumbar disc herniation

For the lumbar spine, people have to bear greater pressure when sitting than when standing. The spine has a forward curvature at the lumbar spine, which can help cushion the weight of the upper body. When the sitting posture is incorrect, the healthy curvature of the lumbar spine will be changed, which will increase the weight borne by the lumbar spine. The correct posture should also be used when lying down with lumbar disc herniation. Improper posture will aggravate the symptoms of lumbar disc herniation.

1. For lumbar disc herniation, it is usually best to adopt supine and lateral positions. In addition, when lying on your back, you should put a soft pillow under your lower limbs to slightly bend your hips and knees and relax your muscles throughout your body. Also, you should sleep on a hard bed more often in your daily life. Sleeping on a hard bed can reduce the pressure on the intervertebral disc, while a soft bed can cause symptoms such as low back pain, so be careful.

2. Lumbar disc herniation is mostly caused by long-term unreasonable posture. The initial symptoms are just incorrect posture, hunchback and local excessive force, which will cause chronic damage to the soft tissue over time and lead to chronic low back pain such as lumbar muscle strain, so it is also called postural low back pain. Lumbar disc herniation is the result of further accumulation on this basis. Therefore, correcting posture is the key among the keys, and reasonable posture is the basis and prerequisite for rehabilitation exercises. Otherwise, if the cause of the disease is not resolved, it will only recur, forming a vicious cycle and becoming increasingly serious.

3. Among the conservative treatments for lumbar disc herniation, the most recognized effective method is backward walking. The fundamental reason is that as a reverse movement, it can effectively force the body's center of gravity to move backward, reduce the lumbar lordosis, and thus correct the posture. (If you have time, you can try walking backwards. When walking backwards, remember to wear flat shoes and walk slowly in small steps. Choose a safe area for backward walking exercises). Walking backwards can force the body's center of gravity to move backwards and correct excessive curvature of the spine. However, walking backwards is not easy to persist and is not very safe.

Finally, the author reminds that for any disease, prevention is better than cure. If you find any physical discomfort, you should make sure to get enough rest and avoid excessive fatigue.
