Swollen eyelids and red bloodshot eyes

Swollen eyelids and red bloodshot eyes

The phenomenon of swollen eyelids and red bloodshot eyes is called eyelid edema. There are many reasons for this condition, which can be mainly divided into physiological and pathological conditions. The physiological reason is that not paying attention to protecting your eyes affects the blood return to the face. Pathological eyelid edema is mostly caused by various diseases. Finding out the cause will help us better treat it.

Causes and common diseases

1. Physiological eyelid edema

Physiological edema is mostly caused by poor sleep at night or a pillow that is too low when sleeping, which affects blood return to the face. This type of eyelid edema is more common in healthy people and often disappears spontaneously.

2. Pathological eyelid edema

Pathological eyelid edema is divided into inflammatory eyelid edema and non-inflammatory eyelid edema. In addition to eyelid edema, the former also has local redness, heat, pain and other symptoms. The causes include acute eyelid inflammation, eyelid trauma, or periocular inflammation. Most of the latter do not have symptoms such as local redness, heat, and swelling. Common causes are allergic diseases or allergies to eye drops, heart disease, hypothyroidism, acute and chronic nephritis, and idiopathic neurovascular eyelid edema.

Differential Diagnosis

Pay attention to distinguish whether eyelid edema is physiological or pathological. If it is physiological, attention should be paid to health care. If the condition is pathological, you need to see a doctor to find out the cause to prevent it from becoming more serious.

examine

The examination should first rule out physiological eyelid edema, and then perform routine urine tests and corresponding examinations based on the causes of the eyelid edema: such as improper use of cosmetics, skin diseases, heart and kidney dysfunction, angioneurotic edema, etc.
