What is potassium salt

What is potassium salt

Potash salt is a relatively special salt that mainly exists in dried-up salt lakes. Its main function is to make potash fertilizer. In addition, various types of chemical substances such as potassium chloride, potassium permanganate, potassium iodide, potassium sulfate, etc. can also be produced. Of course, potassium salts have certain therapeutic standards, and only those that meet the standards are qualified products. Below, we will introduce you to the relevant knowledge of potassium salt in detail.

1. Introduction

Potash salt is formed in dried-up salt lakes and is an important mineral raw material for making potash fertilizers. It can be used to make various potassium-containing compounds (mainly potassium chloride). The composition of potassium salt is KCl, which often contains bromine, rubidium and cesium in an isometric crystal system. It generally contains 52.5% potassium and 47.5% chlorine, and often contains trace amounts of gaseous and liquid inclusions and bromine, rubidium, cesium, etc.

The industrial grade of potassium salt is not less than 6-12% for lean ore and not less than 12% for rich ore. The potassium-containing water in Qinghai Salt Lake in China produces carnallite (KCl·MgC12·6H2O) and potassium-magnesium salt mines, and Yunnan produces rock salt and potassium salt mines.

2. Main Application

Potash mines are mainly used to make industrial potassium compounds and potash fertilizers; 95% of the world's potash products are used as fertilizers and 5% are used in industry.

In the chemical industry, there are about 30 products made of potassium, mainly potassium chloride, potassium hydroxide, potassium sulfate, potassium carbonate, potassium cyanide, potassium permanganate, potassium bromide, potassium iodide, etc.

According to industrial use, 35% is used to produce cleaning agents, 25% is used in the glass and ceramic industry in the form of carbonates and nitrates, 20% is used in textiles and dyeing, 13% is used to make chemicals; the rest is used in the canning industry, leather industry, electrical appliances and metallurgical industry, etc. Potassium chlorate, superphosphate and nitrate are important raw materials for making matches, fireworks, explosives and rockets. Potassium compounds are also used in printing, batteries, electron tubes, photography and other industrial sectors. They are also used in the heat treatment of aviation gasoline and steel and aluminum alloys.

Potassium fertilizer is one of the three major agricultural fertilizers and has a significant yield-increasing effect on most crops. Potassium fertilizers mainly include potassium chloride and potassium sulfate, which are acidic fertilizers. Potassium chloride is used in large quantities and is suitable for crops such as rice, wheat, corn, and cotton, to which chlorine has no harm; potassium sulfate is suitable for cash crops such as hemp, tobacco, sugarcane, grapes, beets, and tea.

3. Product quality standards

1. The influence of useful elements and main associated elements on raw materials

The quality of useful elements determines the processing method of the raw materials. When using the dissolution crystallization method to process potash ore, the main requirement is the grade of useful elements in the ore; when using the flotation method to select potash ore, in addition to the ore grade, there is also a requirement for water-insoluble matter, especially fine mud content.

2. National Standards

Since China's potash mines and processing plants (such as potash fertilizer plants) are a joint entity, the final inspection is the quality of the processed products. Therefore, there is still no unified standard for potash ore. The national standard for potassium chloride products applies to potassium chloride products for industrial or agricultural use that are produced from sun-dried carnallite and sylvite salt mines in salt fields by flotation or dissolution crystallization.
