How to remove Alternanthera philoxeroides

How to remove Alternanthera philoxeroides

Alternanthera phila is a herbaceous plant that often grows in ditches or swamps. It has extremely tenacious vitality and is difficult to eradicate once it invades. However, if it is allowed to grow, it will affect other plants and make the community species too homogeneous. Because Alternanthera phila is too overbearing, it is difficult to completely eliminate it. So today, let’s take a look at how to remove Alternanthera phila with the editor.

Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb. is a perennial herb of the Amaranthaceae family and the Alternanthera genus. The base of the stem is creeping and the upper part is ascending. The young stems and leaf axils have white or rusty soft hairs. When the stem is old, it is hairless and only retained in the longitudinal grooves on both sides. The leaves are oblong, oblong-obovate or obovate-lanceolate, with acute or obtuse apex and gradually narrowed base. The flowers are densely grown in a head inflorescence with a peduncle, solitary in the leaf axils, spherical, with ovate bracts and lanceolate bracteoles. The tepals are oblong, white, shiny, glabrous, acute at the apex and laterally flattened on the back. The ovary is obovate with a short petiole and blooms from May to October.

It is native to Brazil and was introduced to China in Beijing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan and Fujian, and later escaped into the wild. Grown in ponds and ditches.

The whole plant is used as medicine, which has the effects of clearing heat, promoting diuresis, cooling blood and detoxifying; it can also be used as feed.

The main impacts of water peanuts are: (1) blocking waterways and affecting water transportation; (2) crowding out other plants.

(1) They can cause the species in a community to become monotonous; (2) They cover the water surface, affecting the growth and fishing of fish; (3) They can harm crops in farmland, causing a loss of yield; (4) They can multiply in field ditches, affecting the irrigation and drainage of farmland; (5) They can invade wetlands and lawns, destroying the landscape; and (7) They can breed mosquitoes and flies, endangering human health.

Hazard Management Measures:

1. Take plant quarantine measures. It is recommended to establish and improve the quarantine system for this plant in China.

2. Mechanical and manual control: The control of Alternanthera philadelphica should focus on prevention. Combined with agricultural measures,

When the population density is low or in newly discovered invasive areas, it must be eradicated by manually pulling out the rhizomes in the soil. For newly invaded Alternanthera philoxeroides, digging 1m deep and burning it thoroughly for three consecutive years can achieve the effect of eradication. In many waters, people rely on manual salvaging, but if the salvaged plants are not effectively treated in time, they will die and come back to life.

3. Chemical control: In China, chemical control is one of the main measures to control Alternanthera philoxeroides. Herbicides such as clofopyralid (Fluoropyr, Cypermethrin), glyphosate or dimethoate are widely used in China.
