The root of obsessive-compulsive disorder is fear

The root of obsessive-compulsive disorder is fear

More than a decade ago, obsessive-compulsive disorder was still a new term. At that time, Chinese people did not understand it and did not think it was a serious mental illness. In China today, the obsessive-compulsive disorder population accounts for a large proportion, and people are gradually beginning to pay attention to the severity and complexity of obsessive-compulsive disorder. In fact, there is still a blind spot in our cognition that the root cause of obsessive-compulsive disorder comes from the fear deep in people's hearts.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a relatively complex mental illness. Although many researchers have explored the causes of its symptoms from multiple perspectives, including neurochemistry, genetics, and psychology, there is still no convincing explanation. In other words, the cause of obsessive-compulsive disorder remains a mystery to this day.

Systematic analysis and explanation of the psychological roots of obsessive-compulsive symptoms:

We know that the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder can be varied, such as repeatedly wondering whether the ceiling light will fall down, repeatedly thinking about how to speak without offending others, or repeatedly checking your hands, etc. But in the final analysis, the reason why patients think and do so repeatedly is because deep in their hearts they are always filled with endless worries and fears - worried that the lamp will fall and hurt themselves, worried that they will say the wrong thing and offend people, worried that there are bacteria on their hands and they will get sick, and so on. Therefore, in order to avoid these worries and fears from happening, people will get stuck in thinking over and over again, or take certain actions to eliminate the worries and fears.

Therefore, we can find that the worries and fears in the hearts of obsessive-compulsive disorder patients are actually the driving force behind their symptoms. So what is the essence of these worries and fears? In fact, it is the lack of security.

The need for security is one of our basic needs. Only when we feel safe can we feel at ease and confident. On the other hand, when a person lacks inner security, he will be suspicious and will inevitably worry and fear about the occurrence of some uncontrollable dangerous things.

Seeking security is our instinct, so in this case, we will get security through certain means, and compulsive thinking and behavior will arise. In other words, the reason why our obsessive patients have to think and do things repeatedly is actually a behavior to make themselves feel safe and at ease. At the same time, this can also explain why

Obsessive-compulsive patients know that their repeated thoughts and actions are meaningless, but they cannot control themselves. The more they try to control themselves, the more they cannot control themselves. This is because such control is against our instinct and behavior to seek safety: Who is willing to put themselves on the edge of a cliff? Controlling yourself from worrying means that you are not only standing on the edge of a cliff, but also forcing yourself to jump off. So in order to escape danger, obsessive-compulsive friends have to instinctively think and resist more vigorously, and take actions to relieve or save themselves and escape danger.
