Morphological characteristics

Osmanthus fragrans is also known as: Osmanthus fragrans, rock osmanthus, and osmanthus. Evergreen tree or shrub, up to 18m tall. The bark is gray-brown. Branchlets yellow-brown, glabrous. Leaves are opposite, with petioles 0.8-1.2cm long; leaf blades are leathery, elliptical, oblong or elliptic-lanceolate, 7-14.5cm long, 2.6-4.5cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, gradually narrowed to cuneate or broad cuneate at the base, entire or usually serrulate in the upper half, with glandular dots connected on both sides to form small blister-like protrusions. The inflorescence is clustered in the leaf axils, or nearly broom-shaped, with multiple flowers in each axil; the bracts are 2, broadly ovate, thick, 2-4mm long, with small tips, and fused at the base; the pedicels are slender and weak; the flowers are very fragrant; the calyx is bell-shaped, 4-lobed, about 1mm long, and the lobes are slightly irregular; the corolla has 4 lobes, yellowish-white, light yellow, yellow or orange-red, 3-4mm long, and the corolla tube is only 0.5-1mm long; there are 2 stamens, inserted in the middle of the corolla tube, the filaments are very short, and the connective extends slightly from the tip of the anther to form an inconspicuous small tip; the pistil is about 1.5mm long, and the style is about 0.5mm long. The fruit is skew, oval, 1-1.5cm long, and purple-black. The flowering period is September-October, and the fruiting period is March of the following year.
