Where is the triceps

Where is the triceps

The triceps is actually located in the upper arm. Many male friends want to exercise their triceps, which will make their upper limbs look more powerful and the lines will become stronger. If you want to exercise this muscle, the best way is to do sit-ups and push-ups frequently. These two aerobic exercises are very effective and can enhance the strength of the hand muscles.

Located under the skin at the back of the upper arm, it has three heads. The long head originates from the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula, the lateral head originates from the outer and superior side of the radial nerve groove on the posterior surface of the humeral body, and the medial head originates from the inner and inferior side of the radial nerve groove on the posterior surface of the humeral body. The three heads form a muscle belly, whose tendons insert into the olecranon of the ulna. Its physiological cross-section is 22.60 square centimeters. When nearly fixed, it extends the forearm at the elbow joint, and the long head also extends the upper arm at the shoulder joint. It is the main muscle that straightens the elbow joint. When fixed at a distance, keep the upper arm and forearm straight at the elbow joint (such as a handstand push-up movement).

Auxiliary exercises such as weighted arm flexion and extension, parallel bar supported swing arm flexion and extension, handstand push-ups, push-ups, etc. can develop the strength of this muscle.

It is innervated by C6-7 nerves. The patient's upper limb is placed in a pronated position with the elbow semi-flexed and the muscles relaxed. The examiner holds the patient's forearm with one hand and taps the triceps tendon with a percussion hammer with the other hand. If a slight extension movement of the elbow joint can be induced, it is normal. If no obvious movement is induced, the triceps tendon reflex is weakened or even disappeared. It is common in high radial nerve injury, cervical fracture and dislocation, cervical spondylosis, cervical myelopathy, etc. If the range of motion increases and is short, it is triceps tendon hyperreflexia, which is common in upper motor neuron injury diseases such as cerebral palsy.

Triceps tendon rupture

A severe form of triceps tendon injury. It is seen in sports such as gymnastics and football. Most of the time, when people fall on their hands with their elbows semi-flexed, the triceps brachii are ruptured due to the violent contraction. This type of fracture is mostly caused by indirect violence, and is less likely to be caused by the elbow directly hitting the ground. The tendon has more superficial ruptures, the broken ends often occur at the junction of the tendon and the bone, and no stump is left at the distal end. Because avulsion at the olecranon may carry small bone fragments, it is also called "triceps tendon avulsion fracture".

A sound can be heard when the injury occurs, followed by weakness in extending the elbow. Upon examination, the fracture site is empty and sunken, and the olecranon is sensitive and tender. Because the elbow extension function is performed by the triceps and anconeus muscles, the elbow can still flex and extend. To avoid misdiagnosis, the patient can be asked to bend over, raise the affected limb to the side, and do the "anti-gravity elbow extension test". If the elbow joint cannot be actively straightened, it is positive. Surgical treatment is required, and the broken ends must be sutured to the olecranon bone bed. Upper limb supporting exercises can only be practiced 5 months after the operation to prevent re-breakage. If old injuries cannot be sutured directly, fascia transplantation can be used to repair them, which has better results.
