How to diagnose cerebral palsy

How to diagnose cerebral palsy

There are many reasons why children suffer from cerebral palsy. It may be caused by genetic factors, or it may be caused during delivery. However, once the baby is diagnosed with cerebral palsy, it must be taken seriously and actively treated. If cerebral palsy is treated through formal and professional treatment, most children will gradually get better. In fact, you can usually determine whether a child has cerebral palsy through some examinations.

How to diagnose cerebral palsy?

Cerebral palsy, also known as cerebral palsy, is a central motor function defect caused by various reasons. Severe cases are often accompanied by convulsions and disorders of intelligence, behavior, personality, and sensation. Cerebral palsy in children has an impact on the child's intelligence to a certain extent. Therefore, it is essential to examine a child with cerebral palsy.

Electrophysiological testing:

① Electroencephalogram (EEG): About 80% of children with cerebral palsy have abnormal brain waves, among which the abnormal EEG rate is high in hemiplegia. It may be normal or show abnormal background activity. Those with epileptic discharges should pay attention to the possibility of epilepsy.

②Encephalographic topography (BEAM): detects children’s brain development and brain wave changes.

③Magnetoencephalogram.

④ Evoked potential: People with impaired vision or hearing impairment can be given visual evoked potential and auditory evoked potential tests respectively.

⑤ Electromyography: understand the functional status of muscles and nerves. Children with cerebral palsy and muscular atrophy should undergo this examination as much as possible.

⑥ Encephalogram (REG): Check the vascular function and blood supply of the head.

Head CT and MRI: Through head CT and MRI examinations, 1/2-2/3 of children with cerebral palsy will show abnormalities, but normal results cannot deny the diagnosis of this disease. Brain atrophy, external hydrocephalus, encephalomalacia or brain perforation malformation can be found in most patients with cerebral palsy.

Seven-month-old baby's cerebral palsy symptoms

1. When the developing brain is damaged, corresponding symptoms will inevitably occur. The initial symptoms of cerebral palsy in children are related to the degree of brain damage. If the brain damage is mild, the symptoms will occur late and be mild; if the brain damage is severe, the symptoms will occur early and be severe, and multiple symptoms often exist in combination. The more initial symptoms of cerebral palsy in children and the longer they last, the greater the possibility of cerebral palsy.

2. The seven-month-old baby's body is too hard or too soft, spontaneous movements are reduced, he cannot suck or is weak in breastfeeding, he has convulsions, is easily frightened, cries weakly or cries continuously. The child cannot raise his head when lying in the prone position, and his head cannot be upright when held up. The early symptoms of cerebral palsy in children include clenching fists, thumbs adducted, strabismus, and inability to track eyes.

3. When a seven-month-old baby is four or five months old, he cannot stretch out his hands to grasp objects or there is a difference between left and right, he cannot turn over or only turns over to one side. When he is nervous, his upper limbs are flexed, adducted and clenched into fists, his lower limbs are crossed and extended or his head is tilted back or opisthotonos. When grasping objects, his upper limbs are stiff or extended backwards, and his hands cannot touch the midline.

If cerebral palsy in a child is discovered in time, there is usually no major problem. After all, doctors encounter more conditions and are more familiar with them. Parents should encourage their children to actively cooperate with treatment and treat it with a normal attitude. Don't take a negative approach, as this will also affect your child's mental health and burden.
