The difference between distilled water and purified water

The difference between distilled water and purified water

In real life, many people confuse purified water and distilled water. In fact, these are two completely different types of water. The former refers to purified water, which can also be called space water. For example, astronauts drink this kind of water. Distilled water is water obtained through this chemical treatment of distillation. It is very clean and does not contain any nutrients. So what is the difference between distilled water and purified water?

Distilled water is drinkable. It is the cleanest water chemically speaking and the least nutritious water biologically speaking.

Distilled water is pure water prepared by distillation. Can be divided into single and multiple distilled water. After water is distilled once, the non-volatile components (salts) remain in the container and are removed, and the volatile components (ammonia, carbon dioxide, organic matter) enter the initial fraction of distilled water. Usually only the middle part of the fraction is collected, accounting for about 60%. To obtain purer water, add alkaline potassium permanganate solution to the primary distilled water to remove organic matter and carbon dioxide; add non-volatile acid (sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid) to make ammonia into a non-volatile ammonium salt. Since glass contains a small amount of components that are soluble in water, quartz distillation vessels must be used for secondary or multiple distillations to obtain very pure water. The resulting pure water should be stored in quartz or silver containers.

The difference between distilled water and purified water:

Distilled water is made by using distillation equipment to vaporize water and then condense the vapor into water. Although this removes heavy metal ions, it also removes trace elements needed by the human body, and does not remove low-boiling-point organic matter. The reason is that after these low-boiling point organic compounds evaporate, they also condense back into the water along with the condensation of water vapor. Drinking this kind of water for a long time will not only cause a lack of certain trace elements, but also allow some organic matter to enter the body, which is not good for health. Therefore, it is not suitable as regular drinking water.

Water that has been purified is called pure water. Because astronauts first drank this kind of water, it is also called space water.

Normal people drinking purified water appropriately can help the body's microcirculation, but it is not suitable for long-term drinking, because it not only removes bacteria, viruses, pollutants and other impurities in the water, but also removes trace elements and minerals that are beneficial to the human body, such as calcium and magnesium, which are almost completely removed. Therefore, long-term drinking will affect the electrolyte acid-base balance in the body, and affect the activities of nerves, muscles and various enzymes. Especially for the elderly and children, if they do not supplement nutrition and calcium in time, they are prone to malnutrition and calcium deficiency. For people who are not overnourished, it is not advisable to drink purified water for a long time.
