What's wrong with my old toothache

As the saying goes, toothache is not a disease, but it is fatal when it hurts. Toothache is not just a toothache, it can also cause headaches, and in severe cases it can even cause fever. If you take some painkillers when the tooth hurts, it can stop the pain, but if the inflammation in the tooth is not treated, it will become more and more serious. If taking medicine does not work, the toothache will recur. So, what exactly causes recurring toothaches?

Generally speaking, the main oral diseases that cause toothache are caries, acute pulpitis, periodontitis, acute and chronic apical periodontitis, etc. Patients with caries have cavities in their teeth. When they encounter cold, hot, sour, sweet and other stimuli (including food stuck in the cavities), they will feel toothache. Once the stimulating factors are eliminated, the toothache will stop immediately. The most common toothache is mostly caused by acute pulpitis. Toothache is characterized by being spontaneous and paroxysmal, and the pain is aggravated by cold or hot stimulation or during sleep at night. Although toothaches caused by other causes have different mechanisms, they have one thing in common: cold or hot stimulation will aggravate toothache.

The weather is cold in winter, and when people breathe the air, their teeth will most likely come into contact with the cold air. Especially in winter, when the nose is blocked due to a cold, the teeth are in direct contact with the cold air, which naturally causes toothache. Of course, the indoor temperature is high and people tend to eat while the food is hot, but heat stimulation can also easily cause toothache, especially when alternating between cold and heat, the incidence of toothache will greatly increase.

In addition to temperature, other meteorological factors in winter (such as humidity, wind, and sunshine) can also directly or indirectly cause toothache. The air is relatively dry in winter, and it is the off-season for vegetables, so people are prone to getting "hot", which can cause throat and oral diseases, including toothache. Modern meteorological health care research has also confirmed that when a cold front passes or when the area is under the control of a cold air mass, periodontitis is prone to occur and bleeding teeth are also likely to occur. Periodontitis is also prone to occur in windy weather (especially northerly winds).

In addition, the occurrence of dental caries also has a certain seasonality, with a higher incidence in winter and early spring and a lower incidence in summer. This is mainly because in winter and early spring, sunlight and ultraviolet radiation are significantly weaker, and the levels of vitamin D and phosphorus in human blood are also significantly low, making dental caries more likely to occur.

There are many folk methods to relieve toothache, such as "hold a piece of Sichuan pepper in the carious area to relieve the pain"; and "rinse your mouth with salt water or wine several times to relieve toothache". However, if you encounter stubborn toothache, it is best to take painkillers. But pain relief is not equal to prevention, let alone treatment. Usually, you should pay attention to oral and dental hygiene. In winter, you should pay attention to weather changes, avoid colds, and try to reduce the "cold stimulation" of your teeth. When the tooth disease is serious and it is difficult to relieve the pain, you should go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible.
