What causes denture pain

What causes denture pain

Many elderly people will slowly lose their teeth due to their age. After the teeth fall out, not only will they have difficulty biting food, but they will also feel that everything they eat has no taste. At this time, the doctor will recommend that the elderly wear dentures. Although dentures are not as good as real teeth, they can also have a certain effect, and dentures also need to be cleaned. So what causes denture pain?

reason

When dentures hurt, we generally need to rule out abutment tooth diseases first, and check whether the abutment teeth have caries or periodontal disease. If these are ruled out, the pain may be caused by excessive force on the abutment teeth, such as too tight contact between the clasp or base and the abutment teeth. In addition, common problems include base edges that are too long or too sharp, small tumors on the base tissue surface, etc., which cause soft tissue pain. As for the dentures themselves, the supports on the abutments do not play a role in supporting the dentures. When chewing, the dentures sink and directly press on the gums, causing pain. In addition, as far as the patient himself is concerned, there are bones, bone protrusions, bone ridges and thin gingival mucosa in the alveolar ridge area, which can injure the mucosa during the process of removing and putting on dentures, causing denture pain.

Denture cleaners contain an ingredient called persulfate, which can trigger an allergic reaction in some people, causing symptoms such as irritation and pain, tissue damage, redness and swelling, hives, and brittle gums.

examine

Mouth pain lasts for more than ten days. It hurts when you clench your jaw, it's difficult to open your mouth, and there's a clicking sound when you open and close your mouth.

Differential Diagnosis

Removable dentures are large in size and have many parts, which often cause pain in adjacent natural teeth or tenderness of the mucosa. A new set of dentures often requires a running-in period. You may experience slight discomfort or pain when you first wear them, but generally you do not need to see a doctor. After a period of adaptation, the discomfort will gradually disappear.

If the pain persists, or becomes unbearable at the beginning, or even if the mucosa becomes red, swollen, congested, or ulcerated, you should go to the hospital for a follow-up visit immediately. If pain recurs after wearing for a period of time, the denture should be removed and checked for deformation or fracture. If there is no problem with the denture, it is very likely that the adjacent natural teeth have been diseased. There are many reasons for toothache, which can be caused by both odontogenic and non-odontogenic diseases. In odontogenic diseases, pain can be dentin hypersensitivity, pulp pain, periapical pain, or periodontal pain. In non-odontogenic diseases, inflammation of adjacent tissues, tumors, nervous system diseases, systemic diseases, etc. can all manifest as toothache.

Mitigation methods

Choose foods that are easy to chew and avoid eating crispy bread and hard meat.

Remember to have your dentures fitted one hour before seeing the doctor so that the doctor can properly identify the cause of the pain.

Performing a gum massage for one minute every day can help strengthen gum tissue. Grasp the gums and press between your thumb and fingers, or use an extra-soft toothbrush to brush the gums in a circular motion.

Gargle with salt water by adding one teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water. Apply over-the-counter pain-relieving ointment to the gums, but avoid long-term use as it may cause gum inflammation and allergies.
