The teeth are decayed and only the gums are left

Tooth decay, also known as wisdom tooth, is a small hole in the gums that begins to ulcerate, then slowly exposes the gums, and finally the entire tooth rots. This type of tooth decay can cause toothache and even gingivitis. When the tooth decay is gone and only the gums are left, there may also be a short-term inflammation, so you need to see a doctor regularly to do a good job of dental care.

Seeking dental treatment

Understand the signs and symptoms of cavity. It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of cavitation as soon as they occur. This way, you can get a good start in treating them and prevent them from becoming larger and more painful over time. If you experience one or more of the following symptoms, you may have a cavity:

Experiencing tooth sensitivity or toothache. You may also experience mild to severe pain when eating cold, sweet, or hot foods.

How to Treat Tooth Decay

When you bite down, you may feel pain.

You may notice dark pits or holes on your teeth

Some cavities (especially those between or at the back of the teeth in the mouth) will not be visible to the naked eye and will not cause any pain. These types of cavities can only be identified through X-rays, ultrasound or fluorescent lighting - which is why it is important to see your dentist regularly.

Visit the Dentist It is recommended that you visit the dentist about twice a year to get your oral health checked. However, if you suspect you may have a cavity, don't wait for your biannual appointment and ask your dentist about it. At your appointment:

Explain your symptoms and that you have noticed signs of tooth decay. This will help the dentist to locate the cavity.

Get examined. The dentist will then perform an examination to confirm whether there is a cavity. He/she will often use a sharp metal object to feel for soft spots on the surface of the tooth that indicate the presence of a cavity.

Get fluoride treatment. Fluoride treatments are used in the early stages of a cavity, as fluoride can help the tooth heal itself.

Treatment consists of a gel varnish, liquid solution or foam where fluoride is applied to coat the teeth and strengthen the tooth enamel.

When you receive a fluoride treatment, your dentist applies 2 different kinds of fluoride: he/she will apply the fluoride directly to your teeth or place it into a tray set over your teeth. The treatment takes about 3 minutes. [2]

The resulting filling. Fillings, which are also called restorative treatments, are used when tooth decay develops further into enamel and becomes permanent.

The dentist removes the cavity using a drill. The dentist then fills the hole with a tooth-colored resin material, ceramic, or amalgam material.

Silver amalgam materials may contain amounts of mercury that some people oppose based on concerns about possible health risks. If this is a concern for you, consult with your dentist about the materials he plans to use in your fillings.

Depending on the extent of decay, the filling may take up to 2 appointments to complete.
