Why do grapes become soft

Why do grapes become soft

Grapes are a common fruit in our lives. Generally, grapes are a bit hard, but if grapes become soft, it may be because the grapes are rotten, and grapes will also become soft after being oxidized, so when we choose grapes, we should choose hard and juicy grapes. However, grapes may become soft during the growth process, mainly due to calcium deficiency.

Reasons why grapes become soft during maturity:

1. Failure to supplement calcium from the young fruit stage to the fruit ripening stage or insufficient calcium supplementation will result in insufficient strength of the fruit pulp cell wall, reduced pectin and hardness in the fruit, increased ethylene production, enhanced respiration, accelerated fruit ripening, and easy cracking.

In terms of management, calcium is supplemented through the leaves during the softening and coloring period of the grapes. During this period, calcium absorption by the root system can no longer meet the fruit's calcium needs. If calcium fertilizer is not applied to the leaves, the fruit will show late calcium symptoms.

2. Excessive application of nitrogen fertilizer inhibits the grapes' absorption of calcium fertilizer. The branches grow too vigorously, and the leaves "grab" a large amount of calcium, resulting in calcium deficiency in the fruit.

3. If growth enhancers are used in the later stage of fruit enlargement and too much fertilizer containing red-harvesting hormones is used in the coloring period, the soft fruit will become more serious.

4. Too many fruits and excessive pursuit of high yields exceed the reasonable load capacity of the grape vines, resulting in a decrease in the leaf-to-fruit ratio and the leaves being unable to produce sufficient nutrients for the fruits to change color and mature.

Generally speaking, if the yield is too high and the nutrition supply is insufficient, the sugar content of the grapes will decrease, the grapes will become sour, and the flesh cells will become soft. In severe cases, it will cause grape water jug disease.

Let's take a look at the relevant knowledge about grape water jar disease:

Grape water jar disease is one of the common diseases of grapes, which mainly occurs in the rainy season when grapes mature. So what are the ways to prevent and treat grape water jar disease?

Grapevine water pitcher disease symptoms

Water pitcher disease mainly manifests itself on grape berries, and symptoms usually appear after the berries are colored. After the disease occurs, the colored varieties obviously show abnormal coloring and light color, while the white varieties show blister-like fruit grains. The diseased fruit has reduced sugar content, tastes sour, and the flesh becomes soft. The flesh and peel are very easy to separate. The fruit becomes a bag of sour water, and when gently squeezed by hand, water droplets overflow in clusters, hence the name water jar. After the disease occurs, separation is likely to occur between the stalk and the fruit, making it very easy to fall off. The main causes of the disease are malnutrition and physiological disorders.

The incidence of grape water jar disease

Generally, the disease is prone to occur when the tree is weak, the load is too large, the fertilizer is insufficient, and the effective leaf area is small; the disease is particularly serious when the groundwater level is high or it rains during the ripening period, especially after high temperature, and the field humidity is high.
