The human eyes are very fragile. If you don't pay attention to eye hygiene, they are easily invaded by various germs, resulting in inflammation, such as conjunctivitis and other eye diseases. Some people will develop follicles in the superior eyelid conjunctiva and inferior fornix conjunctiva. Patients often feel that there is a foreign body in the eye, and a lot of mucus will be secreted. Some people will also experience eye congestion and swelling. The follicles of this type of conjunctivitis often vary in size and number, and gradually dissipate as the conjunctivitis improves.

1. What is follicular conjunctivitis

The conjunctiva, like other mucosal glandular tissues, is susceptible to any stimulus, causing lymphocyte proliferation and follicle formation. Follicular conjunctivitis is characterized by conjunctival hyperemia and extensive follicle formation and has different clinical types.

2. Causes

It is mainly seen in viral (herpes simplex virus, adenovirus) and bacterial infections, but sometimes it is caused by drugs such as atropine, eselin, etc., which is called atropine or eselin catarrhal conjunctivitis.

Symptoms

It often occurs in the superior palpebral conjunctiva and inferior fornix conjunctiva, and can also be seen in the limbal conjunctiva. The onset is acute, often affecting both eyes simultaneously, and sometimes one after the other. There is a burning sensation in the eyes, a foreign body sensation, heaviness of the eyelids and a large amount of mucopurulent secretions. In some cases, there is enlargement of the preauricular glands, but the tenderness is not obvious. When the secretions are abundant, the disease is more contagious. In addition to the acute catarrhal conjunctivitis lesions such as congestion and edema, the conjunctiva also has follicles. The follicles vary in size, are round or irregular in shape, opaque, and protrude from the conjunctival surface. There are generally a large number of them, which can fuse together and be arranged in rows. They are mostly found in the lower eyelid conjunctiva and lower fornix. Once the conjunctiva recovers, the blebs will disappear without leaving any trace.

IV. Treatment

1Chronic follicular conjunctivitis

The characteristic is the occurrence of follicles in the fornix, a slow course of disease, and no scars left after healing. This disease is more common in children and young people. The subjective symptoms are mild, with little secretion, mild congestion of the conjunctiva, and small round or oval follicles, which are mostly located in the conjunctiva of the lower face and the lower fornix. There were no corneal complications and the preauricular glands were not enlarged. The disease progresses slowly. The follicles become smaller after a few months, and the conjunctiva returns to normal after 1-2 years without leaving scars. Treatment can be done with zinc sulfate, chloramphenicol and other eye drops, and there is no need for follicle compression surgery.

2. Conjunctival follicle disease

The characteristics are the formation of follicles in the lower fornix, which do not fuse, a slow course of disease, and no inflammatory response of the conjunctiva. This disease is common in children. The eye lesions occur in the conjunctiva of the lower fornix, and the patients do not feel any discomfort. There are small round transparent follicles on the surface of the conjunctiva, about the size of a pinhead, of uniform size, varying in number, and arranged in rows. The conjunctiva between the follicles is normal and has no inflammatory reaction. There were no inclusion bodies in the epithelial cells of conjunctival scrapings. The prognosis is good, but the disease course is long, often lasting for several months or years before disappearing on its own. After the follicles disappear, no scars are left on the conjunctiva and generally no treatment is required. If there is any discomfort, symptomatic treatment can be given.
