Some people have a piece of flesh growing in their eyes. Medically, this eye disease is called pterygium, which is commonly known as "fish meat". It is a growth of tissue on the conjunctiva and cornea of the eye. It can grow into the surface of the black eyeball and even cover the pupil. Some stop growing just to the edge of the eyeball. It is generally believed that this disease may be related to long-term outdoor work. To prevent this disease, you should mainly avoid strong stimulation from wind, sand and sunlight, and pay attention to eye hygiene. 1. Concept Pterygium is a common and frequently occurring ophthalmic disease. It is called "pterygium climbing the eye" in traditional Chinese medicine and is commonly known as "fish meat". It is a kind of growth of tissue on the conjunctiva and cornea of the palpebral fissure. It may affect one or both eyes. It is named because its shape resembles the wings of an insect. It is more common in outdoor workers, with fishermen and farmers being the most susceptible. 2. Symptoms After invading the cornea, it gradually grows larger and may even cover the pupil area, seriously affecting vision. It is the degeneration, hypertrophy and proliferation of the bulbar conjunctiva and subconjunctival tissue in the palpebral fissure, which develops into the cornea and takes a triangular shape. 3. Type 1. Progressive type: The neck of the pterygium is wide, with many new blood vessels, congestion, hypertrophy, and a triangular body extending to both sides. The head is obviously bulging and grows into the surface of the black eyeball, even covering the pupil. 2. Static type: The pterygium stops growing when it reaches the edge of the black pupil. It is not congested, is slightly red, has a flat head, and a thin neck and body. It is in a relatively static state, but does not disappear on its own. 3. Pseudopterygium: It can grow on any part of the edge of the black eyeball. It is generally small and grayish white in surface, but it can also be thicker. Scar tissue often forms due to trauma, ulcers of the corneal margin, or chemical or thermal burns of the conjunctiva and generally does not grow back after it forms. It is completely different in nature from the previous two types of pterygium. 4. Causes Its cause is still unclear. It is generally believed that pterygium is related to long-term outdoor work, exposure to wind, dust, cold, heat stimulation and sunlight. At the same time, overwork, lack of sleep and chronic inflammation of the conjunctiva are also predisposing factors. According to traditional Chinese medicine, pterygium is related to wind-heat congestion in the heart and lung meridians and meridian stagnation. Some people also believe that pterygium is closely related to the overdevelopment of the control ligament of the medial rectus muscle and genetic factors. 5. Treatment 1. Drug treatment: For patients with static type, if the pterygium has not invaded the black pupil and does not affect vision, no treatment is necessary. For those with trachoma or chronic conjunctivitis, antibiotic or glucocorticoid eye drops can be used 3 to 4 times a day. 2. For those with progressive pterygium or pterygium growing into the black pupil and affecting vision, they should go to the hospital for pterygium removal, but it is easy to relapse. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that during the treatment period, one should avoid eating spicy foods such as chili peppers and onions, and should avoid smoking and drinking. 5. Prevention The main thing is to avoid smoke, sand, and sunlight as much as possible, pay attention to eye hygiene, and seek timely treatment for trachoma or other types of conjunctivitis. At the same time, you should pay attention to adequate sleep, regular life, avoid dry stools, and other adjustments to your overall condition. |
