My eyes are rolling and my head is hurting

But some people wonder why they get a headache when they move their eyes? In this situation, eye relaxation and massage seem to have no effect. In fact, the headache caused by moving your eyes is most likely an ocular headache, also known as ocular migraine.

Headaches caused by eye diseases such as refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and astigmatism), glaucoma, iridocyclitis, keratitis, corneal ulcers, orbital infections, eye tumors and eye trauma, which stimulate and damage the nerve endings that control the eyes, are called ocular headaches. Everyone should understand the importance of protecting the eyes and learn general physiological knowledge about the eyes and knowledge about related diseases; it is not advisable to read in dimly lit places; people with refractive errors should not use their eyes for too long, and should look at distant objects appropriately to adjust themselves; they can do eye exercises; avoid eye trauma and physical and chemical stimulation; do not rub your eyes with your hands, but wipe your eyes with a clean handkerchief; check your eyesight regularly, discover problems in time and solve them in time.

In order to rule out ocular causes of headache, patients with headache should visit an ophthalmologist promptly and have fundus and eye CT scans examined if necessary. Check your vision regularly to detect ocular headaches caused by refractive errors. Glaucoma can be easily misdiagnosed as migraines due to severe headaches and frequent vomiting, leading to delayed treatment, so it must be taken seriously. Headaches caused by glaucoma are mostly located in the frontal and temporal areas of the affected side. Headaches and eye pain occur at the same time. Pressing the eyeball can aggravate the headache. Acute onset may be accompanied by decreased vision, eye bleeding, corneal edema, etc. Measuring intraocular pressure helps to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment of the cause

Treatment of the cause of ocular headaches is the most effective treatment. If there is refractive error, it can be corrected by optometry and glasses; acute angle-closure glaucoma is most likely to cause blindness and must be treated urgently. The principle of treatment is to use miotic agents and the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor acetazolamide 0.25 grams, orally 2 to 3 times a day; or use 20% mannitol to quickly lower intraocular pressure, and then choose surgical treatment appropriately after the intraocular pressure drops.

Symptomatic treatment

You can take painkillers such as indomethacin, somethacin, analgesic, and carbamazepine, and if necessary, supplement with diazepam and doxepin to eliminate mental tension and anxiety.
