Why do children bite their fingers?

Children have many bad habits, which makes parents feel helpless, because children’s bad habits are very difficult to change, and most of these habits are very harmful to their health. For example, it is very common for children to bite their fingers. Biting fingers for a long time will cause great harm to health. Let’s take a look at the reasons why children bite their fingers.

1. If the child is under 3 years old, this phenomenon is normal.

2. Lack of trace elements needs to be supplemented in time.

3. Parents do not pay enough attention to their children's hygiene and health, lack good hygiene habits, and do not trim their children's nails when they grow long, but use their teeth instead. Over time, this becomes a bad habit.

4. Family discord and strained relationship between parents. Children often do not receive love from their parents and lack the warmth of the family, which hurts or suppresses the children's hearts and leads to emotional tension. Children will suck their fingers to divert their attention and relieve negative emotions. Or the child is feeling lonely and spends his time biting his nails.

5. The high study pressure and overly high expectations of parents make children bear too heavy a psychological burden, causing them to bite their fingers unconsciously to distract themselves and relieve stress.

Psychological counseling:

1. Parents do not scold or beat their children. When correcting a child's finger sucking and nail biting behavior, you should be kind and friendly, and use gentle words and actions. Never yell, threaten, beat or scold them. Don't adopt simple and rough prohibitions, as this will only reinforce the behavior, make the child feel more nervous, and even develop unhealthy psychological feelings such as inferiority complex and loneliness. Tell your child directly that sucking fingers is a childish action and a habit. Now that you have grown up, it is embarrassing to do so. It should also be pointed out that this is a bad habit, unhygienic and can easily cause disease.

2. When a child is ridiculed by other children because of sucking or nail biting, give him/her psychological support and comfort, encourage him/her to change this bad behavior, establish a good image for him/her in front of other children, and never scold him/her in front of others, so as not to damage his/her self-esteem and weaken his/her confidence in changing bad behavior.
