How long does it take for a patellar fracture to heal? Rehabilitation training is very important

As the saying goes, it’s easy to get hurt, but it takes time to recover. In life, we may get hurt if we are not careful. For example, if a child breaks a bone due to playing around, parents will feel worried and anxious about it. In fact, in addition to going to the hospital for treatment in time, the rehabilitation training behind it cannot be ignored. Only by learning how to train yourself can the condition improve faster. So we're going to learn how to do rehabilitation training.

Patellar fracture is a common orthopedic disease. This disease not only causes great pain to patients, but also affects their normal life and work. It not only causes physical pain to patients, but also brings a heavy psychological blow to patients, who are always afraid that they will not recover. Experts point out that after suffering a patellar fracture, we first need to go to the hospital for scientific treatment as soon as possible, and then we need to actively carry out rehabilitation training, so as to speed up the recovery of the disease.

1. If the patellar fracture is not displaced, it can be treated with plaster fixation. The general treatment time is 6-8 weeks. If the symptoms are mild, the plaster can be removed in 4 weeks. If the patellar fracture is displaced more than 2 to 3 mm and the joint surface is uneven by more than 2 mm, surgical treatment is required.

2. The rehabilitation training after patellar fracture mainly focuses on exercising the contraction of the quadriceps femoris. You can practice the knee flexion and extension function moderately at ordinary times. Regarding moderation, it should be said here that it mainly depends on the patient's self-feeling, as long as there is no pain. If you have difficulty walking, you need to use crutches.

3. During the recovery period, patients can practice walking with appropriate weights. When going up and down stairs, pay attention to using the healthy limb to drive the affected limb. When going upstairs, step out with the good leg first, and when going downstairs, step out with the affected limb first. After the patient has been treated, he or she should go to the hospital regularly for follow-up examinations, take X-rays, and then walk with weight depending on the recovery of the fracture.

In addition, patients with patellar fractures should follow the following steps for rehabilitation training in bed: (The following content is for reference only)

1. Sit on the edge of the bed, bend your knees, and straighten them. Your healthy limbs can help, by applying pressure in front of or behind the ankle. When the pain becomes unbearable, maintain this level for 10 seconds. Do not hold your breath to prevent damage to your internal organs. (Prevention method: count loudly; you will not hold your breath if you make a sound). Repeat for 5 to 10 minutes each time, 4 to 5 times a day. The number of times can be increased or decreased appropriately for patients with patellar fractures.

2. If the knee joint cannot be straightened, a doctor or the patient with patella fracture should press it on the bed. Be careful not to let family members press it to prevent another fracture. After 7 to 10 days of the above movements, the flexion and extension range of motion should be significantly improved, with the flexion reaching at least 90°, because 90° is required for sitting on the toilet, and the extension should be between 0° and 5°. Patients with patellar fractures do not require a negative extension angle.

3. Lie on your back on the bed with your thighs perpendicular to the bed (you can have help from others or the patient can hold them with both hands). In this case, flex and extend the knee joint. Because of long-term bed rest, the muscle strength is obviously reduced. When the patient flexes and extends the knee, the calf may not be in the same plane with the thigh, that is, it swings left and right to draw an arc. You must avoid this situation. It is better to move slowly and try to ensure that the entire process of flexion and extension of the calf is in the same plane with the thigh. This movement can exercise both the range of motion of the knee joint and muscle strength, but you still cannot hold your breath.

4. Lie on your back on the bed, push your thighs hard, and just exert force without producing any movement. This can help strengthen the quadriceps and other knee extension muscles. Lie on your back on the bed, squeeze your legs together, and practice the strength of your adductor muscles.

5. When there is a certain progress in the knee joint range of motion and muscle strength exercises, you can stand with crutches or with the help of others in about 10 days (from the start of exercise). Do not stand for too long to prevent long-term bed rest, which can lead to orthostatic hypotension, manifested as nausea and fainting.
