Liver cancer was once called the "king of cancers" due to its poor efficacy and poor prognosis. Over the years, clinical treatment of liver cancer has been tackled by multidisciplinary joint efforts, and nearly 20 treatment methods have emerged, and the level of treatment has also been greatly improved. Since liver cancer often requires the combined use of multiple treatment methods to achieve satisfactory results, coupled with profit-driven factors, the comprehensive treatment of liver cancer often evolves into the superposition of multiple treatment methods, resulting in huge waste and excessive side effects. Of course, the condition of liver cancer patients themselves may deteriorate day by day. This is because it often develops on the basis of chronic liver disease. The liver function of many liver cancer patients is severely damaged and on the verge of failure. At the same time, they also have varying degrees of portal hypertension, enlarged spleen, esophageal varices, etc. Therefore, the body declines day by day. It is necessary to carefully analyze whether it is caused by overtreatment or the disease itself. Clinically, it is believed that the liver function must be protected as much as possible when treating liver cancer. As the saying goes, "If you keep the green mountains, you will never run out of firewood." The liver reserve function is the "green mountains" of liver cancer patients. In treating liver cancer, we must avoid "burning the mountains" and even more so "destroying the mountains." The treatment of liver cancer should be "better right than left" and should not be excessive. It is worth reminding that overtreatment of liver cancer is mainly manifested in the following aspects: Killing a chicken with a butcher knife: The trauma of various treatments for liver cancer is different. Generally speaking, liver transplantation > liver resection > interventional embolization > radiofrequency and other local treatments. Under the premise of similar clinical benefits, the treatment of liver cancer should use the least invasive method as much as possible. Focus on eliminating evil and neglect strengthening the body: When patients with advanced liver cancer receive chemotherapy and embolization, some scholars still advocate the use of large doses and multiple types of drugs, believing that the treatment effect is proportional to the dosage of chemotherapy drugs. However, such "heavyweight" treatment often leads to significant damage to the patient's liver function, decreased immunity, reduced quality of life, and will not prolong the patient's survival, which is also considered excessive treatment. Blind reliance on liver transplantation: If the liver is cancerous, just replace it with a new one. In recent years, there has been a wave of blind "worship" of liver transplantation in China, resulting in a considerable number of overtreatments, with patients who should not have a transplant receiving a liver transplant. Liver transplantation is not suitable for all liver cancers. Only those liver cancer patients without extrahepatic organ metastasis are suitable for liver transplantation treatment. To sum up, the cost of liver cancer treatment is high and the long-term efficacy is poor. It is recommended that patients communicate more with their doctors and avoid unnecessary treatment as much as possible. |
