Is it good to sleep lying down

When it comes to sleeping, everyone may have their own set of insights and sleeping habits. In fact, there is a lot to know about sleeping. It is not just about the duration of sleep. The same duration of sleep but different sleeping postures will also bring different effects. Common sleeping positions include: lying flat, lying on the side, sleeping on your stomach, sleeping curled up, etc. This article will briefly explain the common bad sleeping positions and the impacts they bring.

Common bad sleeping positions

1. Curling up into a ball - hunching over. Many people have the habit of curling up like a baby when they sleep. Although this makes people feel comfortable temporarily, it will put pressure on the back, head and neck over time, causing habitual hunchbacks. At the same time, breathing during sleep will also be affected, which may lead to insufficient oxygen supply to the brain. You should try to avoid sleeping like this for a long time.

2. Sleeping on your stomach - spinal deformity. This sleeping position is not good for spinal health. Because when lying on your stomach, the physiological curvature of the spine cannot be fixedly supported by the bed, it may cause back pain and distortion. If you sleep face down, your skin will rub against the pillow, causing dehydration and increased wrinkles, and it will also affect your breathing. In addition, sleeping on your stomach puts more pressure on your neck.

3. Raise your hands - stiff shoulders. This "surrender" sleeping position has advantages and disadvantages. Lying on your back can prevent wrinkles and acne caused by the contact and compression between your face and the pillow, but raising your hands will pull the shoulder muscles, which will compress the shoulder nerves over time. People who usually have shoulder pain symptoms should avoid sleeping like this.

Diseases that may be caused by incorrect sleeping posture

Heart disease: If the heart's compensatory function is still good, you can lie on the right side. If heart failure has occurred, you can adopt a semi-recumbent position to alleviate breathing difficulties. Avoid lying on your left side or prone.

Cerebral thrombosis: If you suffer from arteriosclerosis and sleep on your side, the blood flow disorder will inevitably be aggravated, so you should change to sleeping on your back. Lung disease: People with diseases on both sides of the lungs are best to sleep on their backs. If the left lung is diseased, it is better to sleep on the left side; if the right lung is diseased, it is better to sleep on the right side.

Hypertension: Patients with hypertension, especially the elderly, should sleep in a semi-recumbent or side-lying position. They can use a 15-cm-high rectangular wide pillow to support both the head and shoulders.

Cholelithiasis: It is not advisable to sleep on the left side. Because the gallbladder is located in the upper abdomen and is shaped like a small wine bottle. When the human body lies on the left side, the "mouth" of the gallbladder faces downward and the "bottom" faces upward. In this way, the gallstones can easily fall into the "bottleneck" under the action of gravity and become incarcerated, causing biliary colic. Therefore, you should sleep on your back or on your right side as much as possible. Low back pain: It is best to sleep on your side so that your muscles can relax completely, avoiding muscle tension, stimulation or compression of nerves, which may cause or aggravate low back pain.

Otitis media: Pus will fill the ear canal on the affected side. In order to ensure smooth drainage of the pus, you can lie on the affected side to promote the discharge of the pus.
