What are the characteristics of halo nevus type leukoplakia

The symptoms of vitiligo with halo-type leukoplakia are quite similar, and it is difficult for us to distinguish them in daily life. Halo-type leukoplakia is more common on the patient's back and limbs, and rarely occurs on the head. The shape of halo-type leukoplakia is mainly round, and the area will become larger as the disease worsens. It is self-contagious and can be treated with laser or drug therapy. Let’s learn about the symptoms of halo nevus type leukoplakia.

Halo-type vitiligo is also known as centrifugal leukoplakia. Halo nevus is medically known as centrifugal acquired leukoplakia. In 1874, a doctor named Hebra first recorded white spots centered on a mole. It was not until 1916 that this disease was studied in detail. At present, it is generally believed that halo nevus is a type of vitiligo. Sometimes it occurs at the same time as vitiligo, so there is a saying of halo nevus type vitiligo. Halo nevus can occur in the elderly as well as in children. It often occurs on the trunk, especially the back, occasionally on the head and face, and rarely on the upper limbs.

Symptoms of halo nevus type leukoplakia

1. Circular or oval hypopigmented spots with a mottled nevus as the center, of varying sizes.

2. The white halo is uniform in color and can gradually increase to the size of a coin.

3. The edge of the white halo does not show darker pigmentation like vitiligo. The mole in the center can fade and look like just a small light red papule, which will eventually flatten or even disappear. It disappears in about a few months to 2 to 3 years, and then the white halo gradually fades away.

4. Most halo nevi are centered on pigmented nevi, occasionally they are hairy nevi, blue nevi, fibroma, neurofibroma or malignant melanoma.

5. Halo nevus are not uncommon. Someone observed 14 patients for a long time and found that half of them had halo nevus that developed from a few to the majority; half of the patients had their central nevus disappear naturally, taking a period of 5 months to 8 years, and then some white halos also disappeared. However, in some patients, removal of the central mole did not result in restoration of pigmentation in the surrounding white spots.

6. If vitiligo accidentally spreads to the area around a mole, it is called vitiligo around the mole, and its morphology is very similar to that of a halo nevus. However, vitiligo around the mole occurs occasionally, and there is a phenomenon of darkening of pigmentation around the white spots, so the two should be distinguished.

To prevent halo nevus type leukoplakia, you need to protect your skin from damage:

The clothes for people with halo nevus type vitiligo should be loose and fit, especially the underwear, panties and bras should not be too tight, and the belt should be loose. Clinically, white spots under the breasts, waist, groin, etc. are often caused by local compression. Do not rub hard when taking a bath; avoid contact with rubber products such as rubber gloves, rubber shoelaces, etc., which often cause local discoloration and vitiligo, and skin damage also occurs in distant parts; avoid prolonged and strong sunlight exposure, and seek early treatment for skin diseases such as eczema, dermatitis, insect bites, etc.
