Will the fetus be deformed if I take pregnancy-preserving drugs?

There are many kinds of pregnancy-preserving drugs, including progesterone, dydrogesterone tablets (Duphaston), vitamin E, and Gushen Antai pills, all of which have the effect of preserving pregnancy. In order to prevent miscarriage, many pregnant women take pregnancy-preserving drugs in the early stages of pregnancy. However, the more pregnancy-preserving drugs you take, the better, because they also have certain side effects. If you take the medicine blindly without the guidance of a doctor, it will have a certain impact on the baby and may even cause fetal malformations.

1. Do pregnancy-preserving drugs have side effects?

Under the terrifying rhetoric of "abortion if not preserved", many pregnant women blindly abuse pregnancy-preserving drugs. As the saying goes, every medicine is poisonous to some extent. Although the pregnancy-preserving drug has the effect of protecting the fetus from miscarriage, all medicines have certain side effects. Therefore, pregnant women should not abuse pregnancy-preserving drugs and must take safe doses under the advice of a doctor. After all, pregnancy is not easy and everything is based on the health of the baby.

The main ingredient of pregnancy-preserving drugs is progesterone, also known as "progesterone". It is mainly suitable for those who have insufficient progesterone secretion and show signs of miscarriage. If progesterone is abused to preserve pregnancy, the effect may be counterproductive: on the one hand, progesterone can cause fetal malformations, especially for male fetuses. Early use of this drug may affect the development of fetal gonads and abnormalities of external reproductive organs.

On the other hand, certain hormones used in pregnancy-preserving drugs can inhibit uterine contractions and weaken the ability of pregnant women to have a natural and complete abortion, thereby causing the dead fetus to remain too long, which is called "postponed abortion." Remedial abortion not only increases the pain of pregnant women, but also makes complications such as embryo retention, uterine perforation or postoperative uterine adhesions more likely to occur. If a necrotic embryo is retained in the uterus, it may release prothrombin, interfere with the mother's coagulation function, cause bleeding, and even endanger life.

2. Which pregnant mothers need to protect the fetus

After signs of miscarriage occur, pregnant women and their families always hope that doctors can do everything possible to preserve the fetus. The desire to have a child is understandable, but as a doctor, you must make a specific analysis of the causes of miscarriage and then make correct treatments, and never blindly preserve the fetus.

Generally speaking, doctors recommend the use of pregnancy-preserving drugs when the pregnant mother has threatened miscarriage or habitual miscarriage. In other words, pregnancy-preserving drugs can only be used for pregnant women who may have miscarriage due to corpus luteum dysfunction, progesterone deficiency, or when ultrasound images indicate that the fetus in the abdomen is still alive.

3. What medicine to take to protect pregnancy

1. Progesterone. Progesterone is a steroid hormone secreted by the ovaries, placenta and adrenal glands. In the presence of sufficient estrogen, progesterone can change the endometrium from the proliferative phase to the secretory phase, providing favorable conditions for the implantation of the fertilized egg. After the fertilized egg implants, the placenta is formed, which can reduce the excitability of the pregnant uterus, maintain the pregnancy state, and promote ovulation.

Usage : 20 mg each time, injected deep into the muscle 1-2 times a day, and stop taking it about a week after the bleeding stops.

2. Dydrogesterone tablets (Duphaston). Daphaston Dydrogesterone Tablets is an oral progestin drug. The main ingredient of the drug is dydrogesterone, which can be used to treat diseases caused by endogenous progesterone deficiency.

The dosage is to take dydrogesterone orally twice a day, 1 tablet each time (10 mg as dydrogesterone) until the 20th week of pregnancy.

3. Vitamin E. Vitamin E can increase women's estrogen concentration, improve fertility and prevent miscarriage.

The dosage is 10-20 mg each time, orally 3 times a day.

4. Gushen Antai Pills. Chinese patent medicine, mainly used to nourish yin and tonify the kidney, consolidate the Chong and stabilize the fetus, and is used for early threatened abortion which belongs to the syndrome of kidney yin deficiency in traditional Chinese medicine. It is said that this drug has undergone reproductive toxicity experiments and is relatively safe for pregnant women.
