How to treat a sprained finger joint?

In daily life, people often suffer hand injuries due to bumps and bruises. Among them, finger joint sprain is a relatively serious and common injury. After spraining a finger joint, it must be treated promptly, otherwise it will cause the injured person increasingly unbearable pain. So, what are the treatments for finger joint sprains? A detailed introduction will be given below!

1. Rest

Minimize activity of the injured part, avoid weight bearing, and elevate the affected limb (hand or foot) to promote venous return, improve local blood circulation, and reduce edema. Do not rub, massage or apply hot compresses to the injured area to avoid aggravating the bleeding and increasing the pain and swelling of the injured area; the injured limb should not be moved immediately to avoid aggravating the original injury or causing new injuries. If necessary, it is best to cancel the day's itinerary.

2. Cold compress

Local cold compress should be applied as soon as possible after injury to facilitate vasoconstriction, reduce bleeding, reduce the stimulation and compression of nerve endings by metabolic products, and play a role in reducing swelling and relieving pain. Ice compresses can be applied for fifteen minutes every two hours until the swelling stops increasing.

3. Hot compress

When internal bleeding has completely stopped 24 hours after the injury, hot compress can be used instead to accelerate local blood circulation, which is beneficial for reducing swelling and pain, tissue repair, and the absorption of metabolic products and blood stasis. The effect will be better if you use a decoction of Chinese medicine that can promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, reduce swelling and relieve pain to hot compress or soak the affected area. Because some sprains are difficult to distinguish from fractures and bone cracks, if you feel the injury is serious, you should go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible.

4. Massage Therapy

1. The patient stretches out his injured hand with the palm facing down. The operator supports his wrist with one hand and pinches the inner and outer sides of the injured knuckle with the thumb and index finger of the other hand, then gently kneads it. After the pain is relieved, the operator slightly increases the force of kneading for 2 minutes.

2. The operator holds the injured wrist with one hand and pinches the tip of the injured finger with the thumb and index finger of the other hand. Then the two hands apply force in opposite directions to pull and stretch the injured joint for about 1 minute.

3. The operator pinches the proximal palm end of the injured joint with the thumb and index finger of one hand, and pinches the tip of the injured finger up and down with the thumb and index finger of the other hand, and then performs slight left and right shaking and clockwise and counterclockwise rotation movements 15 to 20 times each. After completion, use both hands to exert force in the opposite direction to stretch the injured joint, and while continuing to stretch, make the joint passively flex and extend the fingers 15 times each.

4. Then use a slightly heavier twisting method around the injured joint for 2 minutes, until you feel a slight warm sensation locally.
