What are the uses of copper sulfate?

Various chemical substances have brought great convenience to people's lives, and have gradually become useful substances that people cannot do without. For example, copper sulfate is a chemical substance with a very wide range of uses. It is also a very common thing in our lives. Copper sulfate can be used in almost every field. Let's take a look at the uses of copper sulfate. I hope everyone can understand it.

1. Analytical reagents:

Copper sulfate is required for several chemical analyses. It is used in Fehling's and Benedict's reagents to test for reducing sugars. In the reaction, the divalent copper ions are reduced to monovalent cuprous oxide, an insoluble red precipitate. Copper sulfate can also be used in the biuret reagent to detect proteins.

Copper sulfate can be used to test for anemia. Drop a blood sample into a copper sulfate solution. If the blood sample contains enough hemoglobin, it will sink quickly; if the hemoglobin content is insufficient, the blood sample will be suspended in the solution.

In the flame color reaction, copper sulfate appears blue-green, which is much bluer than the color of barium ions.

2. Organic synthesis:

Copper sulfate can be used in organic synthesis. Anhydrous salts are used to catalyze transacetalization reactions. The anhydrous salt reacts with potassium permanganate to form an oxidizing agent for the conversion of primary alcohols. In the organic industry, it is used as a catalyst for the synthesis of fragrances and dye intermediates, and as an inhibitor for methyl methacrylate.

3. Medicinal use:

Copper sulfate can also be used as an emetic, but this is now considered too toxic. However, it is still listed as an antidote under the World Health Organization ATC code_(V03).

4. Agriculture:

Copper sulfate can be used to kill fungi. When mixed with lime water, it produces Bordeaux mixture, which is used as a fungicide to control fungi on crops such as lemons and grapes. Dilute solutions are used in aquariums for sterilization and removal of snails. Since copper ions are toxic to fish, the dosage must be strictly controlled. Most fungi can be killed with very low concentrations of copper sulfate, and E. coli can also be controlled. In addition, the aquaculture industry also uses it as the main raw material for trace element copper in feed additives.
