What are the drugs for treating hyperthyroidism

Currently, more and more people are suffering from hyperthyroidism, so hyperthyroidism has attracted people's attention. Hyperthyroidism is a disease of the patient's own immune system, which is related to congenital genetics as well as caused by acquired reasons. Hyperthyroidism brings great harm to our physical health. In the process of treating hyperthyroidism, because each patient's physique is different, the treatment methods adopted are also different. Only when the treatment is carried out according to the actual situation will better results be achieved. Among the drugs for treating hyperthyroidism, in addition to normal drugs for treating hyperthyroidism, there are also auxiliary treatment drugs. Now let’s talk about what drugs are there for treating hyperthyroidism.

⑴ Initial treatment stage:

The monthly dosage of propylthiouracil or methimazole is 300-400 mg or 30-40 mg respectively. The dosage is larger for patients with severe conditions. It should be taken in 3 divided doses, once every 8 hours. After 2-3 weeks of medication, if there is no improvement in clinical manifestations, the dosage should be increased, but generally not more than 60 mg per day. The initial treatment phase takes about 1 to 3 months and can reduce BMR by about 1% on average per day. If symptoms are still obvious after taking the medicine for 3 months, check for interfering factors, such as irregular medication, iodine intake, mental or infection stress.

⑵Drug reduction stage:

When symptoms are significantly alleviated, weight is increased, heart rate drops to 80-90 beats per minute, and T3 or T4 is close to normal, the dosage can be reduced every 2-3 weeks according to the condition, by 5 mg each time. During the dosage reduction process, clinical manifestations, basal heart rate, weight, white blood cells, T4 and TSH should be followed up regularly. The dose should not be reduced too quickly. Try to keep thyroid function normal and stable, and gradually transition to the maintenance stage, which usually takes about 2 to 3 months.

⑶Maintenance phase: The daily dosage is 5-10 mg, which can be reduced to 2.5-5.0 mg before stopping the drug, for a period of about 1-1.5 years. For patients who are unstable and unwilling to adopt other plans, the maintenance phase can be extended to 2-3 years or longer.

Avoid taking medication interruptions during the entire course of treatment. At any stage, if there is stress such as infection or mental factors, the dosage should be increased at any time and then reduced after it stabilizes. After the above treatment, about 50% of patients with this disease can be cured.

Kind tips:

Diet for patients with hyperthyroidism: Eating foods that inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis may help lower blood hormone levels. These foods include cabbage, peaches, radishes, peanuts, turnips, soybeans and celery. Vitamin B complex may also play a certain role. Paying attention to eye rest is also a key point in the treatment of exophthalmos caused by hyperthyroidism. Avoid reading and using the eyes for a long time in poor lighting conditions.
