Correction and treatment of calf valgus

Calf valgus is also called O-legs, and in medical terms it is called genu valgum. It is a common leg shape phenomenon in life. If you want to make certain corrections and treatments, you can put your hands on your hips or walk backwards to correct it in your daily life. Of course, if it is more serious, you can undergo formal treatment. There are many treatment methods, such as surgical treatment, O-correction instruments, etc.

1. Put your hands on your hips, keep your upper body upright, open your legs 15 cm to 20 cm, and point your toes slightly outward. While inhaling, bring your knees together and slowly squat down. Squat as deep as possible and stay for a moment until you feel your leg muscles tighten. As you exhale, slowly open your knees and stand up straight. Repeat 10 times a day.

2. Walk backwards, making sure your heel touches the ground first, walk in a straight line, and take eight steps each time.

3. Place your feet shoulder-width apart, with your feet slightly inward and your knees inward as you squat and stand up. 20 times per set, 2 to 4 sets per day.

4. Lunge and side leg stretch, 30 times on each leg, alternating 2 times each.

5. Carry a medium-weight barbell on your shoulders, spread your legs about shoulder-width apart, slowly squat down to a full squat, with your knee angle less than 90 degrees, then quickly clamp your legs together and stand upright. Do 8 to 10 times in one set, and 4 to 6 sets in total.

6. Put your feet and legs together, stand up, support your knees with your hands, push and squeeze them inward, and do not separate your legs. Then squat and stand up once, then rotate your knees to the left and right once, and repeat this exercise. Each 15 times constitutes a set, and do 3 sets in total.

7. Do the outward and inward swing exercises with both legs, 15 times per set, and do 4 sets in total.

8. Two people perform leg flexion and extension exercises against each other, 8 times per set, and do 4 sets in total.

Treatment of O-shaped legs:

The correction methods for bow legs include: surgery, bow-correcting instruments, splints, leggings, exercise, corrective insoles, etc.

1. The surgery is suitable for patients with bony deformities. Through surgical osteotomy + internal fixation correction, the normal limb force line and appearance can be restored immediately.

For severe genu varum deformity, a new osteotomy + internal fixation correction in the first stage may cause tension and traction on nerves and blood vessels, which may easily lead to related complications. Therefore, osteotomy and correction with the assistance of an external fixator can be used to slowly correct the deformity, avoid neurological and vascular complications, and the surgery is also minimally invasive.

2. The principles of non-surgical correction methods are basically the same, which is to relax the medial collateral ligament of the knee joint and restore the stable structure of the inner and outer sides of the knee joint. This will cause the tibia to be valgus and achieve the correction goal. The advantages of non-surgical correction methods are low cost and low risk, but the disadvantages are active treatment, which is slow to take effect and requires long-term persistence. Without perseverance, the purpose of correction cannot be achieved.
