What are the characteristics and treatment of sebaceous cysts?

Cortical cysts can occur in many parts of the body, the most common parts are pubic hair, back, chest and skin surface. The main symptoms of patients with cortical cysts are soft and hard spheres with uneven sizes. Some parts are larger, some are smaller, and there may be single or multiple cysts. Patients with cortical cysts should seek treatment in the hospital in time, otherwise the condition will continue to worsen.

Symptoms and signs

1. Prevalent areas: It often occurs on the face, chest, back and scrotum.

2. Clinical symptoms

(1) One or more soft or firm spheres of varying sizes, ranging from the size of a bean to a large one with a diameter of 7 to 8 cm. The surface is often adherent to the skin, and the base can be pushed (Figure 1). Sometimes a small open hole can be found on the surface of the skin, and a small amount of white powder is squeezed out when squeezed. Cysts can exist for many years without symptoms.

(2) The lesions may be solitary or occasionally multiple. Those with particularly large numbers are called multiple sebaceous cysts or sebaceous cyst disease.

Medication

Usually no treatment is needed. Seek medical treatment if secondary infection or lesions develop.

1. Antibacterial drugs can be used for secondary infection; if abscess is formed, incision and drainage should be performed.

2. Lesions can be removed surgically.

(1) During surgery, a fusiform incision should be made at the skin site adherent to the cyst and at the duct opening, and the cyst should be removed together with the skin. The direction should be along the skin grain. If infection has occurred and adhesions have formed in the surrounding tissues, the cyst should be removed completely and thoroughly during surgery. The cyst wall is thin and very easy to break, so it is best to remove it completely, otherwise the remaining cyst wall tissue may easily cause the cyst to recur.
