What causes ankle bone pain?

The ankle is a part that is easily overlooked, and the ankle bones are very fragile. If there is pain in the ankle bones, many people will think that it is related to sprain. In addition to sprains, it cannot be ruled out that ankle bone pain is related to some orthopedic diseases, such as Achilles tendonitis.

1. Ankle sprain

Severe ankle sprains lead to chronic instability. Ankle sprains are one of the most common orthopedic emergencies. Among sports injuries, 40% are ankle sprains, and in basketball, the figure reaches 52%. Doctors generally don’t take a sprained ankle seriously. They just use some Voltalen or spray some medicine and let the patient go home. In fact, more severe ligament injuries are much more serious than fractures. The movement of joints is maintained by ligaments. If the ligaments next to the joints are broken, the movement of the joints will become unstable. If an ankle sprain is not treated well, it will leave long-term instability and swelling of the ankle. Long-term joint instability will wear out the cartilage on the surface of the joint, and cartilage cannot be regenerated. When cartilage is damaged, pain begins to occur and inflammation of the joints occurs. Gradually worsens, resulting in joint deformities. The deformity, in turn, can exacerbate joint damage.

2. Achilles tendinitis

Literally, it means inflammation of the Achilles tendon. Generally speaking, it is caused by excessive stress on the calf gastrocnemius muscle and Achilles tendon during sports, such as playing basketball. In addition, a sudden increase in the intensity or frequency of exercise can often cause Achilles tendonitis. Pain, soreness, tenderness, or stiffness above or inside the heel that worsens with activity, usually in the back of the heel. The ankle is not flexible and becomes red and swollen, or the skin over the Achilles tendon becomes red and hot. When the disease worsens, the tendon will swell and nodules will appear in the affected area.

3. Talus osteochondral fracture

"Sprained ankle" is a very common phenomenon in our daily life. Many people don't take it seriously and think it's not a big deal. In fact, if you sprain your ankle repeatedly, it will often cause damage to the talus osteocartilage. Talus osteochondral injury is a type of ankle cartilage injury (in addition to talus osteochondral injury, tibia cartilage injury may also occur), and it is very common in clinical practice. The main manifestation is partial articular cartilage exfoliation, which affects the deeper subchondral bone. (Subchondral bone is an important "shock absorber" and an important tissue that affects the metabolism of articular cartilage.) Severe calcaneal fractures and talus fractures are one of the fractures that are likely to leave disability. The cause of the pain is synovitis caused by cartilage damage. A talus fracture with the main symptoms of local swelling, pain, subcutaneous ecchymosis, and inability to stand and walk.
