Is asthma hereditary?

Asthma is a relatively common disease that causes patients to experience constant wheezing and coughing. In severe cases, it may endanger physical health. In fact, research has found that asthma is somewhat hereditary. Most patients have some genetic history, so asthma may be caused by inheritance, but some cases are also unilateral.

Asthma has a very clear genetic tendency. In a survey of asthma patients, 40% of them have genetic factors, and asthma occurs among their immediate family members. Among these genetic factors, we say that the closer the relationship, the higher the chance of asthma in the offspring, and the more severe the asthma of his ancestors.

The chances of the next generation inheriting asthma will be higher. The inheritance of asthma is discussed below. For example, I have a patient in the outpatient clinic now. Her grandmother has asthma, her mother has asthma, and unfortunately her son has asthma. Three generations of the family have asthma. Later, when asked, the grandmother asked her parents, and she said she didn’t know if they had asthma.

But I know that they died of lung disease. It can be inferred that four generations of this family all have asthma. We usually ask this during clinical consultations. For example, if we have a patient with asthma, for example, the patient comes to see us with wheezing and coughing.

We will ask whether dad, mom, uncle, aunt, and uncle have asthma. This is from the mom's side. We will also ask whether aunts and uncles have asthma, and whether grandparents have asthma. This is a question we must ask.

For example, if one of his immediate family members suffers from asthma, then the patient is more likely to be diagnosed with asthma and will need to undergo corresponding asthma tests.
