Why does my left ear hurt?

If you experience ear pain, you need to pay close attention to the health of your ears. Pain in the left ear root may be caused by diseases such as auditory neuropathy, ear herpes, and otitis externa. The ears require regular cleaning of earwax and attention to their condition.

1. Acute otitis media causes ear pain: When the middle ear is infected with bacteria, fluid will continue to accumulate. As the pus increases, it will directly compress the eardrum, causing bursts of pain in the ear, which will appear as a pulsating pain. Otitis media ear pain that occurs in the middle of the night often makes it difficult for people to fall asleep. When the pus in the middle ear cavity increases and the pressure rises, the pus can cause the eardrum to rupture and perforate, and a large amount of pus will flow out of the ear canal, and the ear pain will be relieved.

The ear pain caused by acute suppurative otitis media is located deep in the ear canal. It has no obvious effect on external touch and chewing movements. The ear pain is only aggravated by swallowing, yawning or blowing.

2. Otitis externa causes ear pain: When the ear is uncomfortable or itchy, some people like to dig blindly in the ear with fingernails, hairpins, knitting needles, short wooden sticks, matchsticks, etc. If you dig too hard or if you are bumped into by someone, it is easy to puncture the skin of the ear canal and cause skin infection and inflammation. This disease not only causes ear pain, but may also be accompanied by bleeding.

The pain caused by external otitis can manifest as persistent pain and throbbing pain depending on the onset of the disease. The pain worsens when you touch and press the area around the external auditory canal, open your mouth, and chew. After the furuncle becomes purulent and ruptures, the ear pain subsides quickly.

3. Ear pain caused by trauma: If the ear pain is caused by ear picking and damaging the skin of the external auditory canal, leading to infection, the symptoms of external auditory canal furunculosis are severe ear pain, which often affects mouth opening, chewing and sleep. Severe patients may have low fever, constipation, and general discomfort. When the furuncle in the external auditory canal has not been ruptured, there is only a slightly damp feeling in the ear canal; after rupture, purulent secretions will flow out and the pain will be significantly relieved. In the early stages of furunculosis, applying a hot towel to the ear can help dissipate inflammation. If a boil breaks and discharges pus, it should be cleaned promptly to prevent the pus scab from blocking the ear canal and hindering drainage.
