Will severe myopia cause blindness? Complications of high myopia

I believe that most people have problems with eating in their daily lives. In particular, many students now suffer from myopia, which can be said to account for about 80%. Although more and more people are suffering from myopia now, although myopia is relatively common, timely control can also get rid of the risk of myopia. However, many people give up treatment after the onset of myopia and the untimely control turns into high myopia. More serious high toxicity reveals that there may be a risk of blindness. In this regard, we need to understand whether high myopia will cause blindness?

In terms of refractive power, those with more than 6.0D (600 degrees) are called high myopia. Almost all eyes with high myopia have an increase in the axial length and a significant thinning of the sclera at the posterior pole of the eyeball. The main pathological changes are atrophy and thinning of the retina and choroid, which worsen year by year. As a result, many serious complications may occur, most of which can cause blindness. It is the sixth most common blinding disease in my country.

When people with high myopia suddenly experience decreased vision, floating shadows in front of their eyes, especially when there are flashes like lightning, or they feel that there are fixed shadows covering their eyes, they should go to the hospital to see a specialist ophthalmologist as soon as possible. This may be a precursor symptom of retinal detachment or macular hemorrhage.

High myopia can cause some effects inside the eye. There are three common complications:

⒈ Floaters: People with this disease often see black shadows floating in front of their eyes as their eyeballs move, just like mosquitoes and flies flying. This is due to the liquefaction of the normal colloidal structure of the vitreous body.

⒉ Macular hemorrhage: For people with high myopia, the enlargement of the eyeball causes constant traction on the eyeball wall, which can cause metabolic disorders in the normal relationship between the retina and choroid tissue in the fundus. In particular, when the small blood vessels in the macular area rupture due to traction and other factors, macular hemorrhage will occur, which will greatly damage the central vision. At this time, the patient feels that there is a fixed black shadow blocking his vision. Although the bleeding can be absorbed through treatment, there will always be more or less blood marks left, affecting vision.

⒊ Retinal detachment: This is a relatively serious complication and the causes of the disease are relatively complicated. In terms of internal causes, the main reason is that the retinal tissue of patients with high myopia becomes fragile due to degeneration and atrophy, which can easily lead to retinal detachment and blindness. The external cause is mainly the sudden impact of external force, which transmits through the vitreous body, causing retinal rupture, resulting in retinal detachment and blindness.
