Gout is a type of rheumatic metabolic disease. The typical first attack of gouty arthritis is mostly monoarthritis, most commonly affecting the first metatarsophalangeal and big toe joints, followed by the ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, hands and other joints of the feet. The acute phase is usually sudden, often occurring at night, and the patient may wake up due to pain and be unable to sleep all night. If the disease recurs, it may develop into polyarthritis or migratory arthritis. The affected joints are red, swollen, hot, and painful, with limited movement, and there is often exudate when large joints are affected. It may be accompanied by symptoms such as fever, chills, fatigue, anorexia, and headache.

Toes and toe joints are common sites for gouty arthritis, among which the big toe joint is the most common, followed by the tarsal, ankle, heel, and finger joints, and then the metacarpophalangeal joints and wrist, elbow, and knee joints. Larger joints such as the hip, shoulder, and sacroiliac joints are less likely to be affected. Gouty arthritis is even less common in joints such as the mandibular, sternoclavicular, spine, and sternocostal joints.

Gout can generally be divided into four stages during the course of the disease: asymptomatic hyperuricemia gout, acute gout, intermittent gout and chronic gout.

Gout does not have particularly obvious symptoms in the early stages. Patients will initially experience weakness in the limbs and tingling in the body. As the condition progresses, the pain will gradually worsen. The patient will wake up at night due to severe pain, and some patients will experience pain in the instep of the foot. Generally speaking, gout symptoms will be relieved after a few days, but frequent occurrences are likely to cause kidney disease, often with frequent urination at night, difficulty urinating, hematuria, urinary tract infection, etc., and may also lead to the appearance of gross tumors.

Gout can be divided into primary gout and secondary gout according to its different causes. Primary gout is mostly hereditary. There are many causes of secondary gout, including bad living habits, endocrine abnormalities, drug stimulation, nutritional deficiencies, environmental factors, etc.

The main group of people who suffer from gout are middle-aged men. In recent years, the incidence of gout has shown a trend of becoming younger. If you find that you may have gout, you need to be checked. The examination usually includes ultrasound examination, imaging examination, urate examination, urine uric acid measurement, blood uric acid measurement, etc.

If you are diagnosed with gout, you should receive timely treatment. Currently, the main treatment for this disease is medication, but patients need to take medication for a long time. While treating gout, patients also need to pay attention to dietary conditioning, develop a good habit of drinking plenty of water, avoid overeating, choose comfortable shoes, and pay attention to the combination of work and rest, so as to achieve good treatment effects.
