What is the cause of fissured tongue

What is the cause of fissured tongue

A healthy tongue has a thin layer of pale white coating and a smooth surface. Generally speaking, fissured tongue rarely occurs. It will only appear when there is a problem with the body. We must find out the cause of fissured tongue so that we can better treat it. There are many reasons for fissured tongue. Let’s take a look at the specific reasons below.

1. Congenital factors

Normally, some healthy people will have congenital cracks on their tongues. These cracks are usually caused by the congenital malformation of the tongue muscles. The cracks on the tongue surface are mostly covered with tongue coating and generally do not change in shape or position.

2. Deficiency of Yin and Blood

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that cracks on the tongue are not only caused by congenital factors, but may also be caused by deficiency of yin and blood. For example, if evil heat is excessive inside the body, the yin fluid is severely damaged, causing the tongue to lose nourishment from the yin fluid, and the tongue atrophy, resulting in the tongue becoming red and cracked. Or it may be due to anemia and blood deficiency that is insufficient to nourish the tongue, resulting in the tongue being malnourished, and the tongue becoming pale and cracked.

3. Spleen deficiency and dampness

If the tongue is pale, plump and tender, with teeth marks on the edges and cracks on the surface, eating too much is caused by spleen deficiency and excessive dampness. Because of the poor function of the spleen and stomach, water and moisture stagnate in the body, which hinders the physiological function of the spleen and stomach to transport nutrients, resulting in the inability of nutrients to be transported to nourish the tongue, so cracks appear on the tongue.

4. Glossitis

Glossitis can cause cracks on the tongue. Due to vitamin B deficiency or myxedema, the taste buds on the front and sides of the tongue swell. The taste buds squeeze each other, causing cracks on the tongue, forming radial or irregular grooves, which may be accompanied by pain or aggravated by eating spicy food.

5. Tips

Cracks in the middle of the tongue generally do not cause any special discomfort symptoms, but some cracks are deep, which can easily retain food residues and bacteria, causing infection, mild irritation, pain, and bad breath. Therefore, such people need to pay special attention to oral hygiene.
