What causes the gap between teeth to widen

The widening of the gaps between teeth is definitely caused by various reasons, such as the more common tooth decay, or food stuck in the gaps between teeth, and inflammatory recession of the gingival papilla, which also causes the width of the gaps between teeth to increase.

1. Tooth decay (cavities)

There is caries on the adjacent surfaces of the teeth, causing the space between the teeth to widen.

2. Wisdom Teeth

The wisdom teeth that grow in an inclined direction form a certain gap between them and the front molars, causing the gap between the teeth to be too large.

3. Food impaction

If food is stuck between teeth for a long time, the food will be embedded in the gaps between teeth, compressing the gum tissue, which may cause inflammatory recession of the gingival papilla and further widen the gaps between teeth.

4. Tooth displacement

The displaced teeth are buried between the roots of the front teeth, causing the gap between the front teeth to be too wide.

5. Odontoma, impacted tooth

The area between the maxillary front teeth is a common site for odontoma and impacted teeth, which can be diagnosed through X-rays.

6. Gum Recession

When there is mechanical stimulation, incorrect brushing method, gingivitis and periodontal disease, the gingival papillae are easily inflamed and bleed. Continuous gingivitis causes gum atrophy, the height of the gingival papillae decreases, and the gaps between teeth become larger and larger.

7. Periodontitis

The alveolar bone is absorbed by patients with periodontitis, causing the teeth to become loose and causing large gaps. Most adults suffer from periodontal disease, which progresses slowly and is mostly caused by gingivitis. There are not many subjective symptoms except for occasional bleeding when brushing teeth, and it is generally not easy to attract attention. When gingivitis develops to a certain extent, it is periodontitis. At this time, there may be severe bad breath, repeated periodontal abscesses, loose teeth, and wider and sparser gaps between teeth. In severe cases, teeth may fall out.
